MIKE ROBINSON (1939-2009)

A TRIBUTE FROM ALASTAIR AITKEN (contributor to Athletics Weekly since 1962)

MIKE  ROBINSON died age 70 in Chelmsford hospice on the 17th of October and his crowded funeral was held at East Hanningfield on the 30th of October 2009.

Mike Robinson was an exceptionally popular and friendly runner to everyone he met, with a great sense of humour who was loved not only by his wife Sandra for countless years but also by many in the Essex running clubs.

Robinson was in Havering's team that won the M50 National & Southern road relay titles some 20 years ago and as a young man was 1 m12 sec marathon man and a  sub-2 minute half miler. He was running up to a month ago before cancer really got the better of him. A fantastic love of running he had!

My son who like me is a Highgate Harrier second claim Herne Hill Harriers, is his godson and I was a rival of Mike's over the road and the country and used to train with him in the lunch times when he was in the City. He was then working as a Manager for a bottling company. A very, very, great friend of mine
