PROCEDURE AND CRITERIA FOR SELECTION

A Jack Petchey Achievement Award Certificate will be presented each month to two athletes in the age range 11 – 24 who have achieved or advanced in an identifiable and specific way.

Winners will be selected by Club Coaches (two Coaches per month each selecting one athlete, probably but not necessarily from within their training group).

Framed Certificates will be presented formally to winners in short presentations in the Club Houses at Hornchurch and Mayesbrook. In addition, winners will be invited to an annual presentation arranged by The Jack Petchey Foundation when they will receive a Jack Petchey Medallion.

An Award Winners chart will be displayed in both Club Houses.

It is stressed that the awards are not seen as exclusively for those athletes who regularly win competitions and receive Club awards. They are more concerned with recognising genuine achievement and progress.

The following examples from the Foundation may be helpful to Coaches in nominating athletes:

·         Billie S. has been nominated by a school’s Head of Geography. “Billie has made more progress than any other student I have taught. She has maintained a mature attitude to her studies and I respect the way she has not allowed personal difficulties to get in the way of her progress. Billie has also helped other students and is a credit to herself and her family”.

·         Simon M. has been nominated by manager of a boys’ football club. He is not the best player but came to all the practice matches, helped arrange the year’s fixtures and always brings the oranges for half time.

·         The Head of Year 9 at a secondary school has nominated Prachi. She says “it’s not easy being in year 9 because all those hormones start kicking in and the mood swings start. Prachi stands out because she manages to remain cool and calm and looks out for others who have problems”.

·         Things have not been easy for Sandra and her family since her father’s accident but she has still managed to attend all training sessions and has also helped with the Club’s fundraising activities.
