| Weekend News Roundup | |
|
With no club team meetings this weekend many club members were in individual action. Seven U20s and U15s competed for Essex in the Southern Inter-Counties at Hendon in appalling weather conditions on Sunday. In the U20s events Lauren Deadman placed third in the 800m, as did Sarah Deacon in the hammer. Deacon was fifth in the discus, improving her PB to 34.26m, while her younger brother Kevin was just short of his best in placing fourth in the U20 men's hammer. In the U15 girls events Katie O-Sullivan was third in the high jump, Danielle Ross was fourth in the 75m hurdles, while Charlotte Watkins was ninth in the 1500m. Terry O'Leary completed the club interest with sixth places in both shot and javelin. On Monday there were PBs in the Colchester Open for the Harrisons who improved their week-old bests. In the Senior Men's javelin Sam Harrison added almost two metres to 51.19m while younger sister Mel upped her discus best by 13 cms to 34.44m. Also in action over the weekend in the Vets AC Champs were Lesley Felton who won the W40 800m title in a CBP, also winning the 200m, and Gary Howard who won M40 5000m. added 27/08/01 |

| Mayesbrook Trees not so poplar! Relays meeting cancelled | |
|
HMAC officials have had to introduce a root & branch change their home meetings' plans after the roots of poplar trees adjacent to the Mayesbrook Arena track have broken through the track surface. The Southern Women's League fixture on 11 August was the first to suffer, being switched to Newham at great expense, while the home SWL match on 1 September has now been switched to Basildon, as a double fixture. But the biggest casualty is the Floodlight Relays scheduled for 14 September which have been cancelled. The club await news from Barking & Dagenham Council about when the track will be returned to full use, as a 60m stretch of the bend is currently out of use. added 19/08/01 |

| Junior Ladies Third as Sarah D wins Athlete of Match | |
|
A superb team effort from the HMAC Junior Ladies gained third place in the final National Junior League fixture at Watford on Sunday. And Sarah Deacon's excellent form was rewarded as she won the Athlete of the Match award for her Grade 1 winning hammer performance. There were tired
legs and arms among the twelve-strong squad, as eight of them had been in action
for the Southern Women's League team the previous day. But the team spirit
showed through the tiredness as team members took on additional events at short
notice as some of the team picked up minor injuries.

bests, while Hannah Gamester equalled her club pole vault record. |
