Help Needed - URGENTLY

The Club relies entirely on volunteers in each and every aspect of its activities. Currently, we need more people to volunteer to help as follows:

  • Catering Officer for Hornchurch to take responsibility for the running of the canteen.

  • Someone (could be jobshare) to collect track fees at the turnstiles at Hornchurch on Monday and Wednesday evenings (approx 6.30pm – 7.30pm)

  • Mums and/or Dads to help with serving tea/coffee. Soft drinks and sweets in the Clubhouse on a rota basis

If you are prepared to help the Club by getting involved in any of the above ways, please talk to Irene Brennan, Sharon Cossey, Jean Tierney, Brian Kiernan or any other member of the Committee

COMPETITION UPDATE

The New Year started in style for the Club with team gold success for the under-13 and under-15 boys in the Essex County Championships. Congratulations to Michael Jones (individual silver), Jamie Buckley-Stanton (individual bronze), Jack Waldon and Liam Bush in the u13’s and Matt Bloy (individual silver), Daniel Winters, Steve McLachlan and Grant Twist in the u15s.

The under-13 girls took team silver with Sidnie Sales, Emma McAuliffe, Rebecca O’Neill and Alex Edwards outstanding. In the senior men’s race, Trevor Keys maintained his recent form winning the individual silver medal.

In the South of England Indoor Championships, there  were  bronze medals for Anthony Williams in the U20 Men’s Hurdles and for Nicola Hill in the U17 Women’s Hurdles. All recent results can be found on the Club’s excellent website –

 www.havering-mayesbrook.org.

MEMBERSHIP RENEWALS

All members will by now have received a membership renewal form for 2006. A few members have commented on the note accompanying the renewal notice that reminds members of their commitment when joining the Club, to compete when asked to do so by Team Managers. The Committee felt that it was necessary to issue such a reminder because in recent years, it has become common for some young people to join the Club in order to get fit for other sports, particularly football. The Club’s Coaches have made it clear that they are no longer prepared to give up their valuable time to coach such members if they are not willing to compete.

Renewal of Coaching Licenses

Club Coaches are reminded that, by now, you should have applied to UKA on the appropriate form for renewal of your coaching license as well as a CRB check. Please talk to Trevor Wells (0208 270 1727) if you are unclear as to the process.

UKA Club Awards

Following Claire Brennan’s success last year in the UKA Club Awards (Young Volunteer of the Year), the Club is pleased to announce that Sam Harrison has been nominated in the same category for the 2006 Awards.

Sam, who is the Manager of the National Junior Men’s team and also coaches javelin at Mayesbrook, joined the Club in 1994. In the intervening years, he competed regularly for the U17’s and Junior Men’s team and is currently the Senior Men’s No 1 javelin thrower. In addition, Sam was largely responsible for the formation of the Javelin Club, an on-line forum for javelin enthusiasts throughout the UK. Have a look at the website at

Rubbish...........at Hornchurch

We are constantly urging AFC Hornchurch to clear up their rubbish after their football matches, but a great deal of the rubbish left around the stadium is being left by our own members. Please use the bins provided for empty water bottles and litter. There is also clothing and litter left in the clubhouse. If these items are not claimed within the next couple of weeks they will be disposed of.

ESSEX AAA

Congratulations to Club Secretary Jean Tierney who has been appointed President Elect (2006) for the Essex AAA. Jean will become President of the Association in 2007.

Sportswoman of the Year

At the awards ceremony held towards the end of last year, Lucy Sargent won the Barking & Dagenham’s ‘Sportswoman of the Year’ award. Well done Lucy.

COACHING COORDINATION AT HORNCHURCH

Thanks are due to Pat Gahagan who has taken on the role of coaching coordinator at Hornchurch. Pat is keen to establish a framework whereby all disciplines will be covered by qualified coaches including, for example, long and high jump. The Club is very short of qualified coaches in most disciplines, therefore, if you are interested in taking a coaching qualification or finding out more about what’s involved, please talk to Pat at Hornchurch or Trevor Wells at Mayesbrook.

TRACK & FIELD FACILITIES

The Club has recently placed a contract with an approved supplier for the regular maintenance of the track and field facilities at Hornchurch Stadium in line with UKA guidelines. Sharing use of the Stadium with AFC Hornchurch will always bring problems with, for example, mud on the track during the winter, but it is hoped that the new fortnightly visits by the contractor will help to minimise the situation.

BOXING DAY HANDICAP

Congratulations to all who took part in the annual Boxing day Handicap at Rise Park. 33 was the highest number of finishers for 10 years.

1st Senior man: Tony Collins

1st Lady: Jo Sullivan

1st Under 20 (man): Matt Bloy

Our thanks go once again to Dave Bland for organising this annual event.

A date for our diary – the Club’s Annual General Meeting will be held on Friday, March 10th (8pm) at the Havering Indoor Bowls Club, Harrow Lodge, Hornchurch. The bar will be open after the meeting but please note there is a dress code – no jeans!
