Young athletes training groups

Following the success of the two six-week Summer Academies for young athletes, we now have three new coaching groups for young athletes  led by Coaches Mike Owers, Sue Deane and Jenny Golan (joint), and Jo Day, all offering the chance to sample a range of track and field events. Alongside existing groups led by Linda Smith, Derek Earney and Claire Richards and in addition to Eileen and Dave Naylor’s middle distance runners, there should be more young athletes feeding through into Club teams next Summer. It is planned to offer opportunities for athletes to try new events before the start of the 2013 Track and Field season so watch out for details.

A range of equipment more suitable to support the new groups – including Sportshall equipment – has recently been purchased, using grant money from the Jack Petchey Foundation. A small indoor training area under the changing rooms has also been refurbished which coaching groups can use on a rota basis.

Essex Athletics Network

The Essex Athletics Network, of which the Club was one of the original members in October 2010, has continued to provide a comprehensive service to athletics in the County under the management of one of the Club’s senior Coaches, Tony Benton. A wide range of training courses and other relevant activities has been made available to member Clubs and, in recent months, there has been considerable Sportshall activity with four meetings being organised, all well attended. Club athletes have been regulars and some have made the Essex team which were announced recently.

For details of the Essex Sportshall teams see here.

England Athletics Affiliation Fees

For some years, when members pay their annual membership fee to the Club, the fee has included a  5 affiliation fee to England Athletics and this is paid over by the Club. Recently, England Athletics has announced increases of between 200% and 300% in affiliation fees and, not surprisingly, Clubs are making strong representations to the Governing Body, claiming that the level of increase is totally unacceptable. A series of meetings between representatives from England Athletics and the Clubs have been taking place around the Country, the outcome of which is, as yet, not known.

We will update you as soon as we are in a position to do so. Watch this space!

More volunteers always needed

The Club is always looking for additional volunteers to help in a variety of ways with the running of the Club, Such ways can include becoming a Coach or an Assistant Coach (in which activity you would be supported throughout the process) or, perhaps, helping out in the Clubhouse with the serving of refreshments. We would very much like to have the Clubhouse open from around 6pm on training evenings but, currently, we do not have the volunteers to make that possible. If you are interested, do please talk to Irene Brennan or Jean Tierney and, if you are interested in becoming a Coach or Assistant Coach, then please talk to Tony Benton in his role as Coaching Co-ordinator.

Mayesbrook Arena

When the Club had to move out of the Mayesbrook Arena in March 2011 to allow for the track and field facilities to be refurbished for use by visiting Olympic teams, the plan was that we would be able to return in October this year. Through no fault of the Club, that target wasn’t achieved and, to date, Club representatives have been unable to make much progress with Officers from the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham. Another key meeting has been scheduled for late-January when it is hoped that agreement will be reached regarding the level of rent the Authority will be looking for in the event of the Club returning to the Arena and also what services will be provided by the Authority and which will have to be provided by the Club. We will keep members in touch.

Changes to young athletes’ Leagues in 2013

Next Summer, there will be some important changes to the main National  Leagues for athletes in the Under 13 – Under 20 categories. Previously, HMAC competed in the National Young Athletes League which covered Under 13s, Under 15s and Under-17s, but next year the equivalent League (Youth Development League) will only cover Under 13s and Under 15s – and these fixtures will be on Saturdays not Sundays.

The Under 17 age group will be combined with the Under 20s in a new League, which also replaces the former National Junior League. The Eastern Young Athletes League will continue to cover Under 13s, Under 15s and Under 17s with both competitions remaining on Sundays.

For Draft Summer 2013 fixtures see here.

Health & Safety

As a general rule, no athlete should be on the track until their Coach is present to supervise warm-up and training. In addition, all headphones etc should be removed upon entering the Stadium and not used under any circumstances during training (including road runs).

At long last Havering Council will be putting lighting on the drive from Bridge Avenue down to the Stadium entrance, this work is due to be carried out in January.

Date for your Diary

The club's annual Spring Warm Up meeting will be held on Sunday March 24th – further details to follow on the club website.
