ALPHA & BETA TROPHY, HARINGEY, 5 APRIL 2003
A glut of personal bests helped the ladies regain the Alpha Trophy at Haringey today. A runaway 25 point win by the u15s, their fourth successive victory, secured the win and the senior ladies only finished 9 point shy of age group winners Radley, for a 16 point winning margin.
Among many highlights on a warm but windy day schools' cross country internationals Megan Foley and Katie Richardson both caught the eye with 1500m PBs. Megan Foley won a competitive race - her first against seniors - and in the process dipped under 4 mins 39 secs, knocking her mum Lesley out of the club all-time u17 top ten for the event! Katie trimmed four seconds off her best with an impressive win in the u15 equivalent to move closer to the English Schools' entry standard of 4:52 and looks likely to go much faster. In the B events both Helen Roche and Rebecca Heath set new PBs.
| The
800m events also brought excellent results as did versatile Lauren Clark
who smashed her previous best in winning the u15 A race, before adding a
discus PB to win the B event, and making it a win treble with a B high
jump victory. In the senior 800m events Laurie Cossey ran strongly for
second, while Hayley Mottram (pictured, right) had a good B string
800m win. Mottram gained useful 200m points while Cossey was third in the
400m, with Sara Luck just outside her PB in winning the B 400m. In the non
scoring 300m events for u17s Hayley's younger sister Carley took chunks
off her PB with a fast 44.3 clocking, while Robyn Delivett was a stride
away from a new best.
In the u15 long jump Lucy Sargent and Lisa Schofield both leapt further than before to make it a winning double, and Schofield added a new hurdles PB despite the strong headwind when placing second. In the B hurdles there was a fine win for the powerful Helen Mc Donnell, who had a busy afternoon, picking up high jump and 200m points. |
|
The Brennan sisters, Claire & Nina both improved their 400m times. Claire trimmed three-tenths off her best with a positive display in the senior A race, while Nina reduced her best time by a massive three seconds, placing second after leading until the final barrier. Claire later battled against the headwind to place second in the sprint hurdles while Christina Kalejaiye was close to improving her 200m best despite the strong winds.
On the field Mel Harrison again added to her shot best for third, and added javelin and discus top three placings, while Sarah Deacon provided support with a B discus win and shot points. Also in action was under 23 international Kate Brewington who was an impressive long jump winner, again threatening the 6 metre barrier, and also scored in the javelin and 100m. In the u15 events Louise Yard won the discus, and gained two runners-up spots in the shot and B javelin. Lauren McVicar was second in the A javelin, won the B 100m, and anchored the relay team to victory.
Katie O'Sullivan (high jump 4th) and Hannah Gamester (B long jump 3rd and B 100m 6th) completed the victorious HMAC team. It was a wonderful welcome for new team managers Martin Cooper and Sharon Cossey who look set to be a winning combination.
