London
Marathon & Mini Marathon – Sunday, 13th April 2003
Four
Havering Mayesbrook senior men toed the line for their marathon debuts in the
London Marathon on Sunday (13th).
First home was Jason Lendon who finished inside the first thousand in 3 hours 3 mins. Rob Dickenson, who had been in superb form in his build up to the 26.2 mile event, ran despite scaling back his training in recent weeks due to an ankle injury. He recorded 3 hrs 5 mins 21 secs. Martin Chester was 7 mins back in 3 hrs 12 mins 6 secs. All suffered in the hot weather and Rob and Martin had bouts of cramp after 20 miles but they all held on bravely to finish close to their target time of three hours. Russ Middleton suffered even more badly and dropped out after 14 miles.

They
finished the day with a great respect for the marathon distance and are
determined to meet the challenge again in the future – but maybe not next
year!
Linda Smith, running her third marathon, set a new personal best, clocking 4 hrs 1 min 6 secs, close to her 4 hr target.

While
the seniors set out on their 26 mile journey from Greenwich Park youngsters aged
11 to 17 were battling it out in the annual mini marathon for young athletes
from the London boroughs. Havering
Mayesbrook athletes were well represented in the Havering and Barking &
Dagenham borough teams.
In the girls 13 & 14-year-old race Megan Foley regained her title, having finished third last year, after winning in 2001 just a couple of days after her 13th birthday. This time with her 15th birthday the following day she was almost certainly the oldest in the race and she put her sparkling form to good advantage to win by 12 secs from team-mate Katie Richardson who improved on her fifth place last year. With Amie Adams 5th (for Barking & Dagenham) and Lauren Clark 6th it was a great result for the local club.

In
the boys’ 13 & 14 year old race Ashley Reece (running for Barking &
Dagenham) was runner up, with Ross Clarke in 5th
The
girls’ 11-12 race also brought good results. Michaela Roberts (in Barking
& Dagenham colours) was 3rd, Annie Dunn (Coopers) was one place
further back, with Ingrid Deane 6th and Rachel Newman 7th
also in the top 10. In the girls 15-17 race Robyn Matson (Barking & Dagenham)
was 4th, with Charlotte Wood 7th and Vicky Smith 10th.
