London Mini Marathon – Sunday, 13th April 2008

Despite an excellent individual victory in the Girls 13-14 race, Havering’s young athletes failed to win the Adidas London Mini-Marathon in successive years on Sunday.

On the day, the strength in depth of both the Bromley and Richmond squads proved too much for the Havering team to overcome but 3rd place overall was no disgrace. The Mini-Marathon is traditionally run over the last three miles of the main London Marathon course and is a tremendous experience for all young runners.

The Borough’s success in the competition over the past ten years has been due in no small part to a core of athletes from the local club, Havering Mayesbrook. It was one of these extremely promising athletes, Eleanor Bounds, who took centre stage on Sunday. Eleanor completed the three miles in 18 mins 30 secs resulting in a winner’s trophy and an appearance on television during the BBC’s coverage of the main Marathon.

The Havering girls were also strong in the 15/16/17 race with excellent runs from Georgie-Lou Sales in 4th place and Ingrid Deane in 5th. Jennifer Holland made the top-30 in 25th place.

The boys’ 15/16/17 year olds were equally impressive with top-30 positions for Grant Twist (14th), Matt Bloy (15th), Daniel Shanney (25th) and Callum Sutton (30th).

In the youngest age group (11/12), the star for the girls was Rebecca Stanley with a superb 4th place. For the boys, there was an impressive performance from the fast improving Freddy Keefe who finished 9th in his first year in the age group.

Havering’s record in this event is second to none among the 33 London Boroughs and Team Managers Jean and Doug Tierney were quick to praise the efforts of all who took part.
