London Mini Marathon – Sunday, 26th April 2009  

Havering’s young athletes maintained their magnificent record in the adidas Mini London Marathon on Sunday when they won the event overall once again.

Run over the final 4km of the main Marathon course, the event involves competitors from all 33 London Boroughs and takes place immediately before the main event.

Most of the Havering team are members of the local club, Havering Mayesbrook, and their experience showed with a series of excellent performances.

Pride of place went to Freddy Keefe who won the boys 11/12 age group race beating some 200 athletes in the process. In this age group, top-30 finishers were Nick Shade (9th) and James Kidd (16th).

In the girls equivalent race, Havering had five athletes in the top-30 – Lydia Hallam (11th), Rosie Brett (15th), Lindsay McLachlan (23rd), Heidi Surman-Wells (24th) and Rebecca Christmas (25th).

In the boys 13/14 race, both Adam Edwards (4th) and Ryan O’Mahoney (8th) made the top-10. Close up were Hoseah Gikungu (12th) and Thomas Davis (13th). In the girls race, there were top-30 finishes for Amanda Blaxland (27th) and Rebecca O’Neill (30th).

In the older boys race (15/16/17), both Jamie Buckley-Stanton (10th) and Callum Sutton (18th) made the top-20. For the girls in this age group, 15 year old Eleanor Bounds (Havering Sports Council’s Young Athlete of the Year) ran a terrific race to finish 6th whilst Ingrid Deane competing in the event for the final time, also ran well to finish 11th.

Overall, the Havering youngsters finished 1st in two age groups (11/12 boys and 15/16/17 girls), second in two (11/12 girls and 13/14 boys), 9th in the 15/16/17 boys and 11th in the 13/14 girls.

There were also some very good performances from Havering Mayesbrook athletes representing Barking & Dagenham.

In the 11/12 girls age group, Avril Loynes finished 12th and in the 13/14 race, Rebecca Stanley finished 10th. Two girls finished in the top-20 in the 15/16/17 race – Zoey Littlechild was 13th and Rachel Sadler 20th.

For the boys, Joseph Waked ran very well to take 27th place in the 15/16/17 race.
