London Mini Marathon – Sunday, 22nd April 2012

Havering’s young athletes maintained their fine record in the Virgin Money Giving Mini London Marathon on Sunday in finishing fifth overall in the Virgin Money Giving Mini London Marathon.

Held immediately prior to the main Marathon event, young athletes from all 33 London Boroughs competed against each other in three age groups over the final 4km of the Marathon course, cheered on by thousands of spectators. Havering team members qualified via the trial event held in February at Harrow Lodge Park. Most of those successful are members of Havering Mayesbrook Athletic Club but the trial also highlighted other young athletes from local schools.

With some 250 competitors in each race, top Havering performance came from the under-17 boys who took 1st place overall thanks to splendid performances from Hoseah Gikungu (8th), James Kidd (25th), Nick Shade (28th) and Thomas Davis ( 31st). In the boys under-13 and under-15 races, Havering’s competitors found it hard going against some of the top young athletes in London.

The three girls’ squads performed above expectations with the under-15s 2nd overall, the under-17s 5th overall and the under-13s 6th overall. For the under-15s, top performance came from Lydia Hallam in 5th strongly supported by Natasha Patient (23rd) and Isobel Ives (38th).

The under-17 girls had their best result for some years with four girls in the top-40 – Isabella Woods (9th), Bethany Hall (13th), Lindsay McLachlan (30th) and Bethany Chambers (38th). In the youngest age group, Amy Baggs ran well for 17th place with Rebecca Brown in 34th and Emily Marshall 47th.
