London Boroughs Mini Marathon Sunday 13th April 2014
Havering’s young athletes performed brilliantly in Sunday’s Virgin Mini London Marathon run over the final three miles of the main Marathon course immediately prior to the main event.
All 33 London Boroughs compete in the annual event across three age groups (11/12, 13/14,
15/16/17). In perfect conditions and in front of large crowds, Havering’s athletes maintained their fine record in the event by finishing 3rd overall behind Bromley and Wandsworth.
With most of the athletes members of Havering Athletic Club, the under-13 girls followed up their splendid performances over the Winter cross-country courses by finishing 2nd in their age group. Four athletes ran strongly for top-30 finishes with Kate O’Neill 3rd, Katie Mitchell 10th, Rebecca Brown 21st and Sophie Rand 24th.
In the under-15 girls’ race, Emily Marshall ran well in 24th supported by Lois Wyatt (32nd) and Amy Baggs (37th) with the team 8th overall.
Carrying an injury, last year’s under-17 girls’ race winner, Lydia Hallam, again showed what an excellent athlete she is with a 5th place finish, supported by the ever consistent Isobel Ives in 16th and Isabella Woods in 26th. The team finished 7th overall in this age group.
The under-13 boys’ team equalled the
team performance of the girls with a 2nd place in their
age group. There were excellent runs from Jack Rice (6th)
and John Fennessey (23rd) and top-50 finishes from Samuel
Atkins (48th) and Bailey Hearne (49th).
The under-17 boys struggled to make an impact with only the ever reliable Nick Shade, in his final run In the event, managing a top-40 finish in 38th place. Overall, the team was 17th in their age group.
Other Havering AC members taking part were Sarah Wilson who finished a superb 20th in the under-17 girls’ race and Abdul Mohamed who was 56th in the boy’s under-17 event, both representing Barking & Dagenham.

Main Marathon -
Simon Hart was the first club athlete to finish in a
fine 2:46.48 - pretty good considering he
was in California due to business commitments until Friday night!
He stared conservatively and after passing half way in 1:26, ran six
minutes faster in the second half
Next home was Jason Crispin with 3:01.44 on his debut, then Robyn Matson whose 3:08.12 was just outside her PB, Barry Ward 3:37.51; pole vaulter Tina Quinlivan with an impressive 3:50.10, Clare Davies 3:59.55 and Dave Evans 4:12.55
