AAAs Under 15 & Under 17 Championships - Birmingham 14th - 15th August 2004

Bonne Buwembo won a tremendous AAAs U15 title at Birmingham on Sunday when his amazing 57.78m last round effort - a PB and club record by over 3 metres and the third longest ever by an UK u15 boy - claimed gold

After a consistent series of throws in excess of 52m series Bonne entered the last round in silver medal spot trailing Cannock's Brett Byrd by a metre. He steamed down the run way and launched the 600gm implement high into the Birmingham air to touch down a massive 57.78m, under  half a metre short of the UK u15 boys record of 59.21m. It was an amazing result for the Dagenham 14 year old, who only took up competitive athletics about four months ago, under the eye of coach Sam Harrison, winning South of England, English Schools medals on the way to his first national title and is now ranked UK number 1.

The club' hopes of a golden double were short lived as Lucy Sargent crossed the line first in the u17 200m event but was robed of gold when she was disqualified after an official reported her for running out of her lane on the bend. It was a bitter disappointment for Lucy who had missed another national title chance when missing the English schools competition when she competed in the World Junior champs. It was little consolation that on Saturday she had won 100m bronze.

Another emerging talent Katie Richardson shone on the national stage when on Sunday she improved her 1500m PB by a second to run 4m 29.39s to place third to claim her first national track and field medal. Her time lifts her to third on the club all-time u17 list, with another year in the age group.

English Schools winner Chloe van Wulven placed sixth in a competitive 80m hurdles race in 11.96s, run into a stiff headwind, clearly lacking her customary sharpness after a three-week family break, while Lisa Schofield was also in 80m hurdles action but went out in the heats, disappointed with her 12.53s run.

On Saturday Matt Bloy turned in two excellent performances narrowly missing an u15 800m place when he ran a new PB of 2m 4.68s, to place fifth in his semi final after improving his PB to 2m 6.89s in his heat.
