AAAs Under 15 & Under 17 Championships - Birmingham 13th - 14th August 2005

There were four medals - two of them gold - and a new club record for club youngsters at the recent AAAs under 15 & under 17 championships at Birmingham.

Lucy Sargent and Bonne Buwembo supplied the gold medals. Bonne, who won the under 15 javelin title at these championships last year, was always in control of the under 17 event in his first year in the age group after his first round opener of 56.89m outclassed the opposition who were unable to match that or any of his other four legal throws. It was the final confirmation of the poor judgment of the Essex Schools selectors who left him out of the Essex team for the English Schools Championships despite having already won the South of England title.

Lucy posted one of her fastest ever 200m clockings to win gold in the under 17 event, stopping the clock at a wind assisted 23.61s and holding off Windsor's Chinedu Monye. Monye had the previous day narrowly won the 100m title, which Lucy did not contest.

Ross Clarke won silver in the under 17 3000m, and in the process put aside any lingering disappointment from missing a medal in the English Schools event.

In contrast Katie Richardson - who won 1500m gold in the Schools' event - had to settle for "only" bronze in the under 17 women's race.

Matt Bloy ran faster than ever before in the under 15 800m final and in the process broke his own club record edging closer to a sub-two minute clocking. But as in the English School's competition it only placed him fourth - although this time one of the athletes in front of him was a Scot.

Nicola Hill was another athlete who finished fourth in her final of the 75m hurdles for under 15s, but the results do not show this as she was cruelly disqualified by the judges for a trailing leg infringement. Her time of 11.43s - which would have been a new PB and second fastest ever by a club u15 - will not count.

Lisa Schofield competed in both hurdles events - with two races in the under 17 women's 300m event in difficult windy and wet conditions on Saturday and two 80m hurdles races in Sunday's more favourable weather. She was close to her 80m best in both heat and final, placing sixth feeling the effects of her earlier races.

Also in action was Eugene Ayanful who was close to his best in both 100m & 200m heats, and Frankie Calder who clocked a season's best in the 200m for u15 girls, after contesting the 100m on Saturday in awful conditions.

Bethan Siddons had a rare off day in the under 15 girls high jump, clearing only her opening height of 1.43m - over 20cms below her PB and club record of 1.64m.
