Round 2 – Blackpool 2nd
June 2001
Havering
Mayesbrook’s British League team made the long trip to Blackpool with only 12
fit athletes. Injury and illness deprived them of at least 9 athletes.
Whilst
competing against teams with twice as many athletes was always going to be
difficult Havering only missed out on scoring points in 3 events. Although
placed last in the match they remain in 6th place in the league,
levele on points with Morpeth and Telford. There were a number of personal and
season’s best performances posted on a day where everybody had a heavy
workload.
Mark
Bishop typified team spirit by taking on 7 events, and although not in full
training any more, he still managed to score over 50 points for the team, He
recorded 1 of the 2 Havering wins of the match, taking the “B” string
Javelin with a throw of 47.23m. The other “B” string winner was Simon
Kilminster, returning to form and throwing the Hammer 42.33m.
Mark
wasn’t the only one with a busy day. Shaun Stewart making his League debut did
6 events, finishing 7th in the long jump and 6th in the
High Jump, before competing in the 100m – 3rd in 11.2 and the 200m
– 4th in 26.2 Shaun’s day was completed with the 2 relays.
Scott
Spencer and Phil Tierney had completed 3 events each before the 2 relays. Gavin
Maley ran a Season’s best of 1:53.5 in the 800m, placed 7th in the
1500m and competed in both relays. Javelin thrower Sam Harrison added the
unlikely events of Triple Jump and 400m Hurdles to his specialist event to add
to the points tally. Decathlete Leo Barker is still short of fitness after a
long injury but still managed 3 events gaining a valuable 18 points.
Hammer
thrower Keith Robinson placed 4th in the “A” string. Rob
Dickenson ran a PB in the 5000m of 16:14.3 with Graham Pritchard and Matt Bland
completing the middle distance events for the day.
It’s
hoped that the majority of the missing athletes will be able to make the trip to
Jarrow on 7th July for the next round, a match that could be very
important to Havering’s hope in staying in National League athletics.
