– Liverpool 18th
May 2002
Havering
Mayesbrook’s British League team travelled to Liverpool to start their 2002
campaign, in cold and wet conditions. With a team of only 12 athletes it was
always going to be tough. But as he has done for well over a decade Mark Bishop
answered the call, he competed in 7 events and scored 62 points.
Mark’s
impressive performance included a “B” string win in the Pole Vault, as well
as placing third in both the “A” string Long Jump and Discus, gaining 62 of
the teams points.
Phil
Sadler completed a valuable sprint double, winning the 100m and 200m in adverse
weather conditions while Scott Spencer continued good early season form, coming
home in 4th place in the 400m. Gavin Maley equalled a 4 year old PB
when grabbing 2nd place in a hard fought 800m race.
Stephen
Kearns was injured in the 400m Hurdles but still finished in 6th
place, but was unable to take any further part in the meeting. Kevin Tufton
jumped into 2nd place in the “A” Pole Vault with 3.90 metres and
Jason Lendon ran a good race to record 3rd place in the 3000m
Steeplechase.
Rob
Dickenson scored useful points in the 800m and 1500m, and Graham Pritchard got
close to a PB in a hard run 5000m. Hammer
thrower Keith Robinson was as reliable as ever with a third place in his event
before gaining more points for the Club by supporting the omnipresent Mark
Bishop in the Discus, Shot and Javelin.
Stephen
Prady, still only 17 High Jumped to 4th place in appalling weather
conditions as well as taking on the Long Jump and a leg of the sprint relay.
Some
very tired and injured athletes battled round the 4 x 400m to ensure that 6th
place was guaranteed.
It is hoped that more athletes will be fit and available for the next fixture on 6th July – hosted by Havering Mayesbrook at Chelmsford in the absence of either a refurbished Hornchurch or repaired Mayesbrook Park.
