British Athletics League Division 4 – Round 2 – Chelmsford 6th July 2002

Havering Mayesbrook hosted their British Athletics League “Home” match at Chelmsford on Saturday, finishing fifth in a exciting and hard fought contest.

Joe Naughton returned to league action with a bang after missing a year with illness and injury. He gained second places in the “A” Pole Vault, Shot and Discus to add to another second place in the “B” High Jump and winning the “B” Javelin.

Danny Gamester also made a welcome return, competing for the first time a knee surgery gained an impressive 2nd place in “B” string Hammer.

Mark Bishop was able to have, for him, a quiet day. He competed in only 3 events, placing 2nd in the “B” Pole Vault and Long Jump a 4th in Javelin.

Phil Sadler and Scott Spencer, well supported by David Kearns did well in the sprints. Gavin Maley, Rob Dickenson and Graham Pritchard contested the Middle distance races. With Graham running both the 3000m Steeplechase and the 5000m.

The track highlights included a fine third place in the 110m Hurdles who led until crashing in to the final hurdle.  Gavin Maley surged from the back of the pack to snatch third in the 800m and an untried 4 x 100m relay team of Spencer, Sadler, Barker and D Kearns finished an excellent 3rd in 44.2 seconds.

Havering Mayesbrook AC now stand in 6th place in the League after 2 matches, they face the long journey to Blackpool for their next match, where a similar result will go a long way to maintaining National League status.
