A third place finish in the final British League fixture at Coventry on Saturday left the men's team agonisingly just short of promotion. They finished one point ahead of second-placed Exeter and ahead of champions Yeovil but they had needed to beat the Devon club by eight points to secure promotion to Division 3 so they were six points shy of their target. On a dramatic finale to the season in a highly competitive Division only one league point covered four clubs as HMAC ended up third in their first year back on the national stage. But any disappointment was quickly replaced by relief when it was realised that had HMAC scored seven points fewer they would have finished fifth and would have been relegated but instead hosts Coventry joined bottom team Edinburgh despite their late rally. There were four individual wins: Luke Stott's A 200m victory in 22.4s was the only A-string victory, while Andy Lewis (400m - 49.6s), Brad Reece (hammer throw of 39.75m) and Georgie Bean (javelin - 52.13m) provided B string maximum points.
Newcomer ~Richard Morrissey performed well on his debut with a second place in the 100m and third in the 400m and skipper Mark Bishop was forced to fill the gaps collecting invaluable points in his six events with third places in the discus and 110m hurdles. Runners up spots were secured by Anthony Williams in both long & triple jumps, veteran vaulter Stuart Tufton, and 'chaser Jason Lendon. There were third places efforts from Callum Sutton in the 1500m and the 5000m pairing of Glen Hill & Graham Hogan while on the field Joe Ramie (triple jump) and Daniel Gamester (A hammer) were also third. More important points were added by A chaser Rob Warner & 1500m runner Mat Bland, and javelin thrower Sam Harrison, all 4th, while U20s Paul Adair & Adam McCarthy were both fifth and Jake Nelson's league debut earned a vital high jump point. |
