Havering Mayesbrook’s senior men’s team battled well to finish fifth in their second British League fixture at Yeovil on Saturday, edging out the hosts late after lying sixth for much of the day.

Adam McCarthy was the only winner, finishing fractionally outside his best to take victory in the opening event the 400m hurdles B race, after Isaac Ogunlade improved his best for third in the A race. Adam returned to set a new PB in the 400m flat race for fourth and was fifth in the pole vault, while Isaac later ran his fastest 200m for a while in sixth.

Rob Warner ran his second fastest ever 3000m steeplechase but ended up fifth and Jason Lendon further improved his season’s best in placing a fine second in the B competition. Rob also contributed points in the 3000m flat race in a new PB with new club Chairman Chris Smith placing fifth in the B string.

Grant Twist broke through the two minutes barrier in the 800m for a new career best in fifth and was also fifth in the 1500m – Mat Bland provided support in both B strings.

Skipper Mark Bishop added to his league points tally with good efforts in five events. His best results was second in the B javelin, backed up by fourth in the pole vault, B shot and B 110m hurdles and discus points.

Fifth place points were the order of the day in many events against strong opposition. Emmanuel Quarshie was so placed in the shot, and scored also in hammer and discus, while Sam Harrison was fifth in the javelin and eight in the hammer.

In the sprints Shaun Stewart was fifth in the 400m and sixth in the 100m, and Ammad Masood was fourth in the B 200m and fifth in the 100m.   Fifth places also went to the long jump pairing of Anthony Williams and debutant Richard Holland, and Williams was also fifth in his first hurdles race of the year and the triple jump. Junior Jake Nelson went one better in the B high jump and was sixth in the triple jump, with high jumper Jeremy Watson sixth in his event.

The team are sixth in the table at the half way stage and with fixtures at Kingston and Swansea need solid results to cement their place in the National Three division.
