It was late on Tuesday evening, over two days after the event, that the men’s British League team finally received the good news that they'd finished third place in the first National Division 3 fixture, as software fault prevented the hosts Derby from revealing the match scores.

Joshua Olawore took a break from his AS-Level exams to win the long jump in a season’s best, won the B 200m in a new PB, and also set a new 100m best.  Isaac Ogunlade was also in great form, winning the 400m hurdles just outside his best and setting new career marks in the 200m.  Rob Warner won the steeplechase by over a minute and returned to place second in the B 5000m as Grant Twist’s PB placed him third in the A event.

Laurence Goodacre added almost a metre to his shot best in winning the A string while Emmanuel Quarshie took the B honours and the pair scored well in the discus too. The javelin also produced good results as Sam Harrison was a close second and Patrick Lear’s PB won the B on his debut.  Veteran vaulter Stuart Tufton won the B competition while Luke Williams was second in the A string. Jeremy Watson was fourth in the B 400m hurdles and seventh in the high jump.

Anthony Williams placed second in the B long jump and fifth in hurdles and triple jump. Paul Adair was just outside his 800m best in placing third in the 800m and was fifth in the 400m while Shaun Stewart returned to club colours in the 400m B. One-lap runner Richard Morrissey tackled the two-lap event instead but as outkicked as the 800m specialists relegated him to fifth. Paul. Shaun, Isaac & Richard were a good third in the 4x400m relay while Richard Holland, Shaun, Joshua & Richard Morrissey were sixth in the sprint relay

Under 20s Richard Holland (B 100m PB), Hoseah Gikungu & Massi Dendani (both 1500m) will have learnt much from their competition at this level. Match runners-up Southampton host round 2 on 30th June.
