With most of Britain basking in an early heat-wave a weekend in Cornwall seemed like an ideal way for the men's British League squad to start their season. But after the long trip to the south-west they not only had to battle strong opposition but heavy rain, cold weather and strong winds in placing fourth at Carn Brea, Redruth in their National 3 match on Saturday.

The field events produced good points, with the Havering squad boosted by Higher Competition Athletes from other clubs, allowed under league rules. BUCS triple jump silver medallist Chuko Cribb (Milton Keynes) won the triple jump and added high jump and long jump points, while former Welsh hammer champion Graham Holder (Bexley) won the B discus and was hammer runner up on his first appearance in Havering colours.  The Havering shot pairing of Laurence Goodacre and Emmanuel Quarshie took full points and Laurence added a hammer PB, while Duane Jibunoh won the discus and was fourth in the javelin, with coach Sam Harrison runner up in the javelin B. More runner  up points came from John Adekoya, with second in both the high jump & triple jump B strings and Richard Holland in the B long jump. Luke Williams had to juggle between pole vault and hurdles.

Paul Grange was runner up in the 800m and sixth in the 1500m, and was partnered by Jamie Buckley-Stanton who showed he is on his way back with fourth & fifth places in the B events. Skipper Jason Lendon led by example with runners up position in the B chase and filled gaps in both hurdles and pole vault for valuable points. Rob Warner was third in his speciality 'chase and added 400m hurdles & 3000m points, with Matt Bland clocking his fastest 3000m time since 2013 in fifth.

Sprinters Timi Kuye & Nathan Steele battled the strong headwinds to score in both 100m & 200m and Alex McCree made his league debut in the 400m & relay.  Two weeks after his marathon debut Gavin Maley made the trip to cover gaps then had the misfortune to strain a hamstring in his first event.

Team manager Peter Estcourt was full of praise for his promoted squad. "It was a difficult match to start with as several of younger athletes couldn't spare time off due to A Level and university exams. But the athletes who made the long trip showed great team spirit to make sure that we scored points in every event to earn fourth in a tight finish. We hope to field a stronger squad in the next fixture at Chelmsford on 4th June."
