A brilliant victory at Chelmsford on Saturday took the men’s British League squad to the top the table at the halfway point of the season.

An all-round team performance saw strong results across the board but pride of place goes to jumper-turned sprinter Josh Olawore. A niggling ankle injury has prevented the 20-year-old Bath University student from competing at his preferred long jump event this summer but his sprinting powers are unaffected as he sped to a club record in winning the 200m after setting new 100m marks in second place. Josh’s 21.35s clocking for the half-lap sprint bettered the previous club best which had stood for 25 years. He was ably supported in the sprints by Lewis Bailey who was runner up in both, also setting a new career mark in the 200m.

There were two A string wins in the field as Chuko Cribb’s triple jump PB took the spoils, after his high jump runners up placing, and Duane Jibunoh winning discus throw was close to his best, and returned to improve his javelin PB in third. The throws yielded a good crop of points as Laurence Goodacre won the B discus and was A shot runner up, with Emmanuel Quarshie winning the B, Graham Holder too second in the hammer, and Sam Harrison placed fourth in the B javelin despite nursing an injury.

In the jumps, John Adekoya placed second in both the high & triple jump B events, and Alex Law was long jump runner up, with Richard Holland fourth in the B, while Luke Williams & Arron Bonning were fifth & third in the vault.

Veteran Paul Grange continues to improve with age, smashing his 800m and coming close to victory just after his 37th birthday and B string Finn Hutton, 20 years his junior, dipping below two minutes for the first time on his league debut in the B race. Over the barriers Rob Warner & Jason Lendon were fourth & second in the ‘chase and the hurdles pairing of George Hadler & Karl Tucker scored well in both 110m & 400m hurdles events.

Alfie Waithaka and Matt Bland both set season’s bests in the 5000m and late replacements Fraser Boston & Michael Duncan added 400m points and ran 4x400m relay legs. In the non-scoring events Nathan Steele improved his 100m & 200m bests with fast winning times and joined Karl Tucker, Lewis Bailey & Josh Olawore in the third placed sprint relay quartet.

The team’s superb performance saw them finish over 30 points clear of the opposition and with first round winners Newquay and runners up Chelmsford placing fifth and sixth Havering are in pole position as they head to Bournemouth for the third round on 2nd July.
