The men’s promotion ended with a fourth place finish in their British League fixture at Yeovil on Saturday as Bournemouth’s victory on the day ensured that they join Newquay in the National 2 division next season.

Laurence Goodacre’s winning streak continued as he threw a season’s best for shot victory and Emmanuel Quarshie added another B string win, also in a season’s best. More good throws’ points came from Duane Jibunoh who won the discus and Graham Holder was runner up in the B, as well as placing third in the hammer. Jibunoh was fifth in the javelin as Georgie Bean was third in the B. Chuko Cribb has been a prolific points scorer for the squad and at Yeovil he added a triple jump win, and points in both high jump & long jump events where his partner John Adekoya was in great form placing third in the B triple and equalling his high jump best for fifth.  Luke Williams and super-ver Stuart Tufton added pole vault points.

On the track Josh Olawore added 100m runners up spot to his brilliant season and was also third in the long jump. Rob Warner showed a return to his usual form with a season’s best in the ‘chase to finish second and also over the barriers Adam McCarthy returned to BAL action with a good second place in the B 400m hurdles and Karl Tucker was third in the B sprint hurdles. George Hadler added sixth place points in both sprint & 400m hurdles A strings.

Finn Hutton smashed his 800m best but could only finish seventh in a high quality race and more hard earned track points were earned by veteran stalwarts Matt Bland (800m & 3000m) and Martin Chester (1500m & ‘chase). Ben Davis (1500m), the 400m pairing of Matt Owers and Sydney Conteh added more track points, while in the sprints Nathan Steele bagged two fourth places and Lewis Bailey was fifth in the 200m.

Although disappointed at not achieving successive promotions, experienced team manager Peter Estcourt was nevertheless delighted that the squad had come so near to a place in the second division, a result which improving squad will be aiming to achieve in their 2017 campaign.
