Havering men's British League fifth place finish at Bournemouth on Saturday confirmed they will enjoy another year in National 2, as the team placed a solid fourth in the table.

As in the last round, the strong opposition meant that top three places were hard to come by. Shandell Taylor celebrated his GB Under 20 call up with long jump victory, with John Adekoya third in the B and Shandell added second in the triple jump and a new career best in the high jump placed third, as 15 year old Jamal Thomas was second in the high jump B on his league debut. Another U17 Peter Brinton-Quinn was equal second in the B vault.

Graham Holder's season best won the A hammer and Emmanuel Quarshie took full points in the B shot, while Laurence Goodacre was second in the shot A, and improved his best for third in the discus. Max Law stepped up to senior competition to place second and his 63.08m throw was the fourth longest ever by a club athlete with the senior spear and the longest by a club Under 17, as his coach Sam Harrison was fourth in the B.

Once again, track points were at a premium. Tom Keevil's victory in the B 800m provided the only track win, with Max Jones fourth in the A. Rob Warner was runner up in the B 'chase as Ben Davis found his PB and fifth fastest time by a club U20 only placed sixth in the A string, and Ron added third in the 5000m, to total 8000m on a hot day.

The team's slim promotion hopes disappeared after a series of late withdrawals but they would have needed to be at full strength, as a dominant victory by Kent AC on the day saw them move up from fifth in the table to join already-promoted hosts Bournemouth in Division 1 next summer. But the young Havering squad will have benefitted from this season and will comeback stronger next year.
