British Athletics League Gold Cup First Round,

Kingston 11 June 2000

Havering Mayesbrook senior men's team, still very much understrength due to a lengthy injury list expected to struggle in this first round encounter at Kingston upon Thames.

Fortunately for the Club Phil Sadler wasn't on the injury list. Phil took on the 100m, 200m 400m as well as both relays and emerged with five victories on the day, a remarkable performance that encouraged the rest of the team.

The honour of securing the first victory of the season fell to Hammer thrower Daniel Gamester, continuing his early season improvement by throwing 45.47m. Elsewhere on the field events, Aaron Bonning Long Jumped to 2^nd place and then won the Triple Jump, Sam Harrison threw the Javelin 47.14m to gain 2^nd place, victories were achieved by Shaun Stewart with a 1.80m High Jump and Kevin Tufton who equalled his personal best with 4.20m in the Pole Vault. Brett Heath won the discus throwing 40.75m and was 2^nd in the Shot Putt with 13.06m, both efforts below previous efforts this season but both achieved the Olympic standard for partially sighted athletes and could result in trip to Sydney later this year.

On the track in addition to Sadler's 5 victories Glen Coppin squeezed a last stride win in the 800m. Gavin Maley finished strongly to win the 1500m in a personal best of 3:57.8, Graham Pritchard and Rob Dickenson secured good points in unaccustomed events of the 3000m Steeplechase and 5000m.

Mark Bishop returned to the track to run a leg of the 4 x 400m,his first track race since 1998, since undergoing 2 operations on his knee, his 53.5 on the first leg encouraged the team to race to first place and gain the twelfth victory of the day.

Now it's on to the Semi Finals at Enfield on July 23^rd.
