England Athletics Under 15 & Under 17 Championships - Bedford
Saturday 25th & Sunday 26th August 2018
Club athletes battled against the elements as well as strong opposition to win three gold and five silver medals, and set two club records, at the England Athletics Under 15 & Under 17 Championships at Bedford.
Conditions were better on the first day of the two-day event on Saturday and Rebecca O'Rourke won two medals in the National Disability age group events, winning silver in the Ambulant 200m race before taking gold in the 1500m. Bradley James added to his English Schools silver with another silver podium place in the Under 15 boys' javelin.
In contrast Sunday's events were held in wet conditions, with the rain torrential at times. Lola Kuponiyi retained her unbeaten record this summer in the Under 15 girls' shot with what for her was a modest distance and Max Law's hopes of beating the championship record or UK best also fell foul of the weather as he had to settle for another gold medal with a throw 10 metres short of his best.
The versatile Alice Brown added two silver medals to her tally. After winning her 800m heat on Saturday Alice went for gold on Sunday in heavy rain, leading the race throughout until Northern Irish athlete Victoria Lightbody overhauled her 10 metres from the line. She was back in action a few hours later in the discus adding another silver, to her bronze in the event from last year. Freya Killilea was fifth in the same competition.
Toby Bishop's blistering start in the Under 15 boys' 80m hurdles final not only won him silver, but was a new PB and shaved 1-100th of a second off the club record for the event for his first national medal. The second club record came in the Under 17 women's javelin as Adelaide Thatcher-Gray threw superbly to better her club record in placing fifth.
