England Athletics Under 15 & Under 17 Championships - Bedford

Saturday 30th & & Sunday 31st August 2014

Michelle Hughes added the England Athletics Under 17 300m hurdles title to her English Schools' gold with a flawless display at Bedford on Sunday.

Drawn in the outside lane, after a messy second place run in the heat meant she was seeded outside the favoured middle lanes, Michelle took an early lead in difficult windy conditions and was never headed, coming home in a time of 43.22s which was a new PB & club record, improving on her Schools' winning time.

Tom Pitkin also added to his growing collection of medals with a 56.52s clocking in the Under 17 400m hurdles.  Tom moved into medal contention on the final bend and just held on narrowly to bronze in a photo finish, getting the verdict over fast-finishing Enfield & Haringey’s George Vaughan by just two hundredths of a second.

Modupe Shokunbi was just outside the medals in both sprints.  On Saturday she finished fourth in the 100m with 12.01s after clocking her fastest ever time, a wind assisted 11.78s in qualifying for the final. She returned on Sunday to place fifth in the 200m with 25.01s and her wind assisted semi-final time of 24.83s was also her fastest run.

Michelle Hughes also added 80m hurdles fifth with her 11.62w run, with Lucy Bailey missing out on a final place with a 12.06s for sixth in her heat while Sonny Nash was ninth in the U17 javelin with 48.07m.
