A lack-lustre performance by the young athletes team saw them finish fourth in the Eastern Young Athletes League Final at Bedford on Sunday. Despite some good individual results the team were never in the frame to defend their trophy and finished way off the pace

The under 17 women and under 15 girls were best placed, each in third.

The under 17 women achieved their placing despite the absence of eight key athletes in action at the Derby junior final. Christina Kalejaiye returned to the young athletes team after a 15 month break and showed that she has lost none of her speed as she sped to a sprint double.  Lisa Schofield was in winning form dipping under 12 seconds for the first time in the 80m hurdles, while Robyn Delivett won the B 300m event.  Lauren McVicar capped a busy day with a javelin PB for second and Carla Schofield stepped up from the u15 ranks to claim second in the B discus.

Frankie Calder's double set up a third place finish for the under 15 girls. She claimed maximum points in winning the 200m and threw the shot further than before for victory. The improving Nicola Hill emerged victorious in the 200m B, and set a legal PB in placing second in the 75m hurdles. Bethan Siddons confirmed her recent good form with a confident high jump win and Charlotte Humphreys defied the blustery conditions to take the 800m B.

The usually dominant under 15 boys could place no better than fourth. Powerful sprint ace Eugene Ayanful was well clear of the opposition in both 100 and 200m, while national champion Bonne Buwembo had almost a ten metre margin in wining the javelin. B string success was earned by Ben Warden in the discus and Paul Adair's 800m run.

But the remaining age groups struggled to make an impact against top class fields. The under 13 boys had no winning hands and wound up fifth as star turn Harrison Ellis found a shot PB only good enough for second, a position he matched in the high jump.

Both the under 17 men and under 13 girls were sixth out of six.

The under 17 men's match was the most closely fought contest but the HMAC lads were still ten points adrift of the closely contested top five. Rookie hurdler Richard Demko was the sole victor as he set new 100m hurdles landmarks, while his A string partner Anthony Williams took five-tenths off his PB but was still last. The highlights for the under 13 girls was a discus double from Jessica Humphreys and Rebecca Luck.

It was a disappointing end to a successful season for the combined boys and girls squad, whose performances in the National YAL had promised a better result in this end of season swansong, but on the day their below-par performance saw them well beaten by teams they would normally see off with comfort.
