Havering
Mayesbrook’s young athletes got their season off to a flying start as the
combined boys’ and girls’ notched up a victory in the opening Eastern Young
Athletes fixture at Luton on Sunday.
With victories in
five of the six age categories Havering Mayesbrook won by over 50 points
from hosts Luton.
With
some of the established names resting ahead of Monday’s Essex championships
event it was an opportunity for some newcomers to catch the eye of team managers
Sue Deane and Colin McVicar.
There
was a strong showing for the u13 boys who
claimed seven individual wins and the relay first place. There were double
victories from Jack Richardson (400m and long jump A – both PBs), James
McAusland (800m B and long jump B) and Harrison Ellis (high jump and 200m, plus
a shot PB). Michael Isted took high jump B honours, as did Steve Payne in the B
400m.
The
u13 girls won ten individual events and the
relays. Lilla Jacks made it a sprint double, and her B string partners Rebecca
Clements (100m) and Alexandra Edwards (200m) made it a clean sweep.
Clements also took the B long jump spoils.
Jessica Humphreys set two PBs on the way to discus and shot wins, with
Samantha Hill taking the B discus event and newcomers Laura Bunton and Chloe
Jackson took both strings of the 1500m.
The
u15 girls were in dominant form with eight
wins. Frankie Calder se a new PB in winning the 100m and also on the longer
sprint and Charlotte Humphreys was an impressive 800m winner, smashing her PB.
Lauren Newton and Elizabeth James made it a discus double, while Nicola
Hill’s high jump PB was also best on the day. Catrina McAuliffe was a B string
hurdles winner and also set a shot PB. Claire Robinson’s 1500m was good enough
only for fourth in a good race, while behind her Jade Edwards was first B string
home.
Bone
Buwembo’s javelin win capped a good performance by the u15
boys. His winning effort
bettered the 44m qualifying distance for the English Schools Championships, with
promise of more to come from this raw beginner. Gary Tonks took a B sprint
double but Eugene Ayanful’s A string PBs only placed second in both sprints.
The McLachlan brothers both tasted glory, with older sibling Chris
winning B 1500m and Steve setting a new 800m PB winning the B event, as Matt
Bloy again lowered his own best in the A race.
Bloy also won the B shot. Bradley
Reece set discus and javelin PBs, while other wins came from Uzoma Nnajuiba
(hurdles), Ben Warden B discus and Nat Senior the B long jump.
For
the u17 girls Lauren Clark was in good form
with a wining 800m PB and B discus win, and Louise Yard improved her shot best
to win, also taking discus A honours. Emma
Christmas added 3m to her javelin best in winning to go 2nd on the
all-time list, and also won 100m B. Lauren McVicar won the B javelin and B long
jump, Chloe van Wulven doubled up with hurdles and high jump wins, and Lisa
Schofield won the B hurdles.
The u17 boys lacked numbers but set some good marks in a good team performance. Chris Newton won the discus and Harry Tyler the javelin, and Alex Van Ristell won a B string double in the same events. Another double came from Michael Waller and Luchien Anderson in the 400m, while Michael Jones tackled the 100m hurdles for the first time placing 2nd.
