There was a disappointing end to club the young athletes team's competitive season when they could place no better than sixth in the Eastern Young Athletes League Final at Bedford on Sunday.

Bonne Buwembo once again provided the headlines as he closed in on the 60m barrier and Steve Saville's 20-year-old u17 club record of 60.12m with a massive 59.54m effort. It was the second longest throw in the u17 age group in Britain this year. The only other winning performances in this age group came from the hurdles pairing of Anthony Williams and Richard Demko who earned maximum points in the 100m hurdles event, and Gary Tonks who won the B discus and also placed second in the B javelin. Other runners up spots for the u17 men went to Eugene Ayanful in both sprints, Vincent Lazaro in the B triple jump,  Craig Moore whose discus PB gained him second place and Grant Twist - who stepped up from the u15 age group to place 2nd in the B 1500m. Another u15 to rally to the cause was Simon Brown who came away with PBs in his 400m & 800m races against older opposition.

There was strong show by the u15 girls, who placed second in their category. Not for the first time Frankie Calder led the way with a sprint double, and shot second place. Nicola Hill won the long jump but lost out in the hurdles to Herts Phoenix's English School's medallist Stephanie Gaynor. Bethan Siddons added B long jump win in a new PB to her expected A high jump success and Catrina McAuliffe and Carla Schofield earned maximum points for their discus efforts.

Both the u13 and u15 boys were third in their age group. There were half a dozen PBs for the u13s. Michael Jones added five metres to his discus PB to set a new club record of 25.21m, beating Bradley Reece's record set two years ago in the equivalent final. Jordan Brown and Ben Western contributing two PBs apiece, both in long jump and Brown in the 100m and Western in the hurdles.

The u15s did manage a couple of wins with Daniel Winters carrying off the 800m honours, while Steve McLachlan took the plaudits for his B 1500m success with Matt Bloy runner up in the A competition. Georgie Bean and Bradley Reece were both second in the javelin A&B, while Bradley was just one cm shy of his discus PB in placing third.

The u13 girls struggled to make much impression but recording some encouraging performances none less than Sam Hill who more than made up for missing out in her favourite hurdles event due to an injury while warming up to smash her PB to win the event, as Katherine Knight's PB ensured a winning double. Kike Oniwinde added a shot PB in second place and the promising Rebecca O'Neill's 800m PB also earned runners up spot.

A depleted u17 girls' team finished well behind the pack. Lisa Schofield won the hurdles and was third in the 100m but none else finished in the top 3.
