The Havering Mayesbrook young athletes’ team put up a strong performance against powerful hosts Bedford in their Eastern YAL match on Sunday.

The Under 15 boys won their age group, with a strong all-round performance sealed by four A victories thanks to a Jordan Brown 100/LJ double, Mike Jones’ 400m win and  Brad Burr’s expected javelin success, while Jack Fairbanks added a 1500B win.

In the U17 categories Georgie Sales stepped down to 800m for a good win and sharpened up with 2nd in the B 100m.  Lannahn Leary-Kiernan moved up an age group to good effect as she set a discus PB for victory, with Becky Luck also runner up in the B competition and won the B shot. Rebecca Rollinson & Becky Owen were second and first in the A & B hurdles, and Emma Fox (1500), Alex Beard (800m) and Rachel Kerr (javelin) won valuable second place points.

There was as strong showing from the U17 men, who pushed the hosts all the way, with clean sweeps in both 800m (Grant Twist & Simon Brown) and 1500m (John Whitehead & Daniel Winters). Kieran Nelson and Brown again took maximum hurdles points and Jordan Jackson’s discus PB won him the B event as Bradley Reece was 2nd in the A string. Georgie Bean added a customary Javelin victory.

The U15 girls scored well with Rebecca O’Neill winning the 800m, while another strong field showing saw Sam Hill take both discus A & shot B, while Kike Oniwinde & Sidnie Sales won both javelin strings, and Sophie Baggs made it a discus double.

Deborah Knight starred in the U13 girls category with PBs in all her three events – shot, discus & hurdles – while Sacha Martin again too high jump honours and B long jump, Becky Stanley was a good 1500m winner and Erin Baggs won the B discus.

U13 boys’ won two B strings thanks to Tyler Bennet (discus) and Daniel Wood (shot), while newcomer Danny Wilson threw well in discus & shot. Second place pairings went to Fred Mokoso & Ryan Blake (hurdles) and Ryan O’Mahoney & Tyler Bennett (800m).

But the healthiest results for the club were in the massed ranks who took part in the non-scoring competitions, putting pressure on team members for their places with some good performances, many exceeding the scoring team.
