The Eastern Young Athletes squad started their defence of the league title with a convincing victory at Bury St Edmunds on Sunday. Victories from the Under 15 and Under 17 Men and strong showings in the other age groups saw them finish over 100 points clear.

The Under 17 Men overwhelmed the opposition with nine A string and three B string wins, plus relay success.  Andrew Kerr successfully returned to club action after a long lay-off caused when his leg was shattered by a hammer. He showed that he had fully recovered by registering winning personal bests in hammer and pole vault. Danny Wilson stepped up to the U17 ranks with an excellent 40m+ discus through, fifth on the club all-time lists, and took javelin honours for good measure.  Josh Olawore improved his hurdles PB to win and also won the long jump, and more jumps success came from Adam Wileman and Lewis Walker-Dobson (both triple jump) and Harry Phillips (high jump). Adam also won the B hurdles while Dale Marks-Swain took 200m honours in a new best.

The Under 15 boys were also well clear with eight victories. Karl Tucker had a win double in the high jump and B hurdles and Alex Law doubled up for victory in the long jump and discus. Another win double came from Alex Habbershaw with wins in the B long jump and 400m, where his A string partner Nathan Jackson made a winning debut at the event. Thomas Howard completed the victory roll with B discus success.

The Under 13 boys was thin on the ground with only five competitors and did will to finish third thanks to solid results. Alex Hewitt again starred with a sprint double, and Sam Chapman won the B 100m event.

The Under 17 Women just lost out in the team stakes but posted strong results. Laura Drew had a hat-trick of wins, coming out on top in the A string discus and hammer and B javelin. Rylie Trott and Debbie Knight had a win double in the hurdles and further B victories came from Sophie Reynolds in the B high jump and Jess Seekings in the B discus.

Throwers Georgie Taylor and Rachel Forder dominated proceedings in the Under 15 girls category with five victories between them.  Georgie won the A discus and hammer, while Rachel’ hat-trick of wins came in the A javelin, B shot & discus.  Mercy Gutteridge cleared two metres for the first time for victory in the pole vault and became the undisputed club record holder after sharing the earlier mark of 1.90m.

The Under 13 girls were runners up and claimed four wins. Emma Whitby won the B 100m, Emily Bunton won the B 1500m and there was a high jump win double for Tolu Akingbade and Freya Gutteridge.
