The Eastern Young Athletes squad lost out to league champions Bedford at St Albans on Sunday as heat-wave conditions saw a club record and a host of personal best performances.

The Under 17 Women ran out clear winners although short of full strength. Elysha Thatcher-Gray's shot PB of 11.57m improved her club record for victory and Izzy McDonach returned from injury to win the B.  Amelia Owers won the hammer in a new PB and second places in the field events went to Emily Marshall (triple jump), Chmidi Okpalauko (discus) and Kerys Middleton (javelin). On the track Jess Mitchell (800m) and Kate O’Neill (1500m) both won comfortably, with Sophie Rand winning the 1500m B and Emily Marshall runner up in the 800m B. Jess also won the 300m B race and Mayi Hughes improved her hurdles and high jump PBs in second, and was also second in the long jump.

The Under 13 Girls edged out Norwich to win their section. Ruby Mace once again starred with PBs and wins in the high jump & javelin, and runners up in the hurdles. Alice Brown doubled up with wins in the 800m & discus, with Hannah Yexley winning the B discus and second in the 1500m B. Lola Kuponiyi impressed on her debut with wins in the shot & B high jump and there were runners up spots for Alice Atkins, hurdles B, Isabella Smith (200m B - PB) and Maddison Ruston (shot B - PB).

The Under 15 Boys were second to overall winners Bedford, thanks to a strong team effort. Joseph Hogan-O’Neill provided the only A string victory in the discus supported by second places in hammer & shot, both in PBs. AJ Jordan won the B shot and improved his 300m best for second, and Aaron Freshwater added full points in the B high jump and was the B 300m runner up in a new PB. Joseph, AJ & Aaron were joined by long jump runner up Tobi Idowu in the second placed relay quartet. Peter Brinton-Quinn added second place points in the pole vault & javelin B, and there were also second places for Henry Lay (1500m B) and hurdler Emmanuel Lawal on his debut.

Rosie Brown's discus win in a new PB & English Schools National standard qualifier topped the poll for the third placed Under 15 Girls. Rosie Brown added a win in the B 800m in another PB, as Molly Sweetman was second in the A, and Robyn Moody took full points in the B discus. The hurdles pairing scored well as Grace Newson was second in the A with Millie Hodges winning the B and Poppy Ellis earned B string second places in the 300m & long jump.

The Under 13 Boys also had to settle for third despite eight victories. Daragh Thomas chalked up a hat-trick of wins in the high jump, B 100m & long jump, both in PBs, with Oliver Botham adding full points in the B high jump.  There were A string wins for Jacob Blanc (hurdles), Alex Ford (1500m), Ashton Thatcher-Gray (Long jump) and Mason Smith (discus) - all in PBs.
