English Schools Cross Country Championships Hylands Park, Chelmsford - Saturday 9 March 2002

Lauren Deadman and Sara Luck won team gold and silver respectively for Essex in the English Schools Cross Country Championships at a windswept Hylands Park, Chelmsford yesterday.

Lauren Deadman had looked likely to miss her final crack at the last English Schools due to a slight knee injury, but after a fitness test two days before, had declared herself fit to run.

She was placed 10th in the Senior Girls event and was first Essex scorer home as the squad scooped the team event by 25 points. Lauren afterwards declared herself pleased with her performance which saw her in front of Basildon's Alexa Joel and Stacey Ward who have both challenged her this winter, and did not feel that her injury had affected her performance.

Faye Fullerton had to give her own final Schools race a miss, as she was enjoying the much warmer climate in Portugal, where she was warm-weather training with the GB team in preparation for the World Championships in Dublin on 23/24 March.

Sara Luck was a respectable 25th in a field of over 300 in the Intermediate Girls event as Essex claimed runners up spot.

In the Junior Girls event county champion Megan Foley was unable to compete due to a perforated eardrum and missed out on a possible top ten placing. In her absence Katie Richardson, who also has not been in the best of health, in 50th was first club member home in her first National Schools attempt. Robyn Matson, originally a reserve for the 8-strong team, after finishing 10th in the County School stepped into the squad to place a good 96th, while Essex silver medallist Charlotte Watkins found the going tough in 145th. The Essex squad finished out of the medals in 5th. Martin Heys flew the flag for the boys, finishing 177th in the senior boys event
