English Schools Championships - Birmingham Friday 13th & Saturday 14th July 2007

There were four medals - three of the gold variety - at this weekend's English Schools Championships at Birmingham.

Kike Oniwinde's massive 38.16m opener in the junior girls' javelin event was not only a PB and club record it also put the competition beyond reach of the field. It added three metres to her official best and a metre to her longest throw set in a school's competition and was almost four metres further than her rivals.

Nicola Hill likewise was a class apart in the intermediate girls 300m hurdles event on Saturday. She dominated her heat to break her PB and club record in 44.59s - the fastest qualifying time. And in the final just three hours later she ran even faster to come home a second clear in 43.82s to win her first national medal. It was the perfect send off as she flies out to Serbia on Saturday to represent Great Britain U18s in the European Youth Olympic Festival at 400m hurdles.

Bonne Buwembo was the only thrower over 60m in the senior boys' javelin with his 61.45m best. Unbelievably it was his first schools' gold, and only second medal in this competition after his junior boys' bronze in 2004. He was not selected by Essex in 2005 and placed sixth in the Inter Boys competition last season as he returned from injury.

In contrast to the sunny conditions on Saturday competitors on Friday had to endure dismal damp conditions throughout the day. Bradley Burr defied the weather to throw well to win silver in the junior boys' javelin, in his first national schools competition. His 49.26m throw was just two cms further than his Essex team mate Kieran Record, from Basildon, who had to settle for bronze.

Also in Friday, Georgie Bean was a good seventh in the inter boys' equivalent, several places above his national ranking, while Lisa Schofield was below her best in the senior 100m hurdles contested in wet and windy conditions.
