England Athletics Under 15 & Under 17 Championships - Sheffield

Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th August 2007

Kike Oniwinde and Nicola Hill both added England Championship titles to their English Schools' successes at Don Valley Stadium, Sheffield this weekend.

Kike's winning 37.74m throw to land the U15 Girls' javelin title was her second furthest ever, beaten only by her School's gold throw, to preserve her unbeaten 2007 record in the event. Her opening effort of 34.36 would have proved far enough to win had she not launched her last round attempt over three metres further, to confirm her status as UK number 1. She does not hold the longest throw in the age group this summer however – that honours goes to Oxford’s Danielle Anderson whose early season 38.99m throw tops the rankings. However her second best throw is just 34.14m and she finished way off medal form at the English Schools Championships and she was fourth at Sheffield..

Nicola Hill's 300m Hurdles victory on Sunday was also her second fastest ever, behind her Schools' win and extended her unbeaten sequence at the event which dates back to April 2006. She was expecting a close contest from the Schools silver medallist Jenny White who had recently improved her best to 43.88s – just 6-100ths short of Nicola’s UK top ranking time. But although White was in Sheffield she withdrew just before the start of the heats, feeling unwell.  It was left to South of England runner-up Emily Stevens to set the early pace but as in the Southern Championships Nicola held her form better to come away over the last two hurdles to win in 44.50s, with Stevens hanging on for second in a new PB of 44.76s.

But there was no final place for Nicola in the sprint hurdles as her 11.71s heat time was 3-100ths outside a fastest loser spot.

Schools' javelin medallist Brad Burr missed out this time. His 50.72m throw was only a metre short of his best, but good enough only for 5th. Georgie Bean did well to place 7th with 53.88m in the U17 javelin, one of his longest throws. Georgie Sales was also 7th, in the U17 women's 3000m in 10m 34.39s,

Also in action was Sam Hill who was just outside a top-8 final place in both U15g discus & shot, throwing 24.29m and 9.12m.
