Essex Indoor Championships, Lee Valley, 26th / 27th January 2008

There was a strong showing from Havering Mayesbrook athletes at this weekend's Essex Indoor Championships at the Lee Valley Athletic Centre, Edmonton

Jimi Tele won a hat trick of medals. On Saturday Jimi dominated the U15 Boys' long jump, winning easily with his only valid jump of 5.63m and also won silver in the 60m sprint with 7.58s. He returned on Sunday to add the U15 200m gold to his day one medals with a powerful victory in a fast time.

Sara Luck also struck double gold. She cleared 1.60m to win the senior high jump then dropped out to run the 800m which she promptly won in 2m 16 secs.

Rebecca O'Neill powered to gold in the U15 Girls' 400m - a new event for the age group, clocking a useful 65.73s and added 800m silver with 2:27.04s.

Jack Edgar-Hill won his first gold in club colours with his U17 Men's hurdles success, coming through strongly in the latter stages after a sluggish start to edge ahead by 6-100ths to equal his week-old PB.

Another new boy Laurence Goodacre, who joined at the end of track season, stepped up into the U17 ranks and made an instant impression as won shot gold with 13.43m - the fourth best by a club athlete.

Also in the U17 age group Gabriel Makinwa's two PBs won him gold and silver in the long and triple jump respectively

The more experienced Lucy Sargent returned to long jump action with gold in the senior women's event with 5.37m - her first competition at the event since she tasted international success. She also tackled the senior hurdles but was beaten by Claire Brennan who won silver. Both also competed in the 60m sprint, along with newcomer Zoë Young. Lucy won her hear in 7.88s but withdrew from the final but Claire did not qualify.  Zoë was fourth in the final.

Another hurdles silver went to Nicola Hill who showed good improvement to reduce her PB to 9.29s, and later set a 60m sprint PB of 8.22s. Lauren Edgar-Hill's U20 hurdles debut brought her promising fifth place

Joseph Ramie added U20 triple jump silver with his last round 13.09m and was also long jump runner up with 5.98m. Bethan Siddons cleared 1.60m for U20 high jump silver and Anthony Williams added an U20 Men's hurdles bronze.

Field event medals went to siblings Cameron & Jessica Fazakerley who came home with silver & bronze high jump medals in the U15 boys & U13 girls competition and Sophie Baggs took another bronze in the U15 girls shot.

Nicola Peachey's hurdles PB of 10.10s won her a final place where she finished sixth (10.18s). Nina Brennan was just edged out of a medal in the senior women's 400m, with Hannah Gamester one place back in fifth.

Esther Tele had a busy weekend. She was fifth in the U17 women's 60m sprint with 8.24s after her heat of 8.22s, and just outside the medals in both long jump and 200m.

Another U17 who did well was Angela James. She tackled the 60m hurdles for the first time and after a strong heat run of 9.48s improved to 9.44s in placing fifth in the final. She was also fourth in the high jump on countback and fifth in the long jump.
