Essex & Eastern Indoor Championships, Lee Valley, 8th & 9th February 2014

It was a golden weekend at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre as club athletes notched up no fewer than 13 titles, 17 other medals and two club records at the Essex & Eastern Counties Championships.

Rising star Jairzinho Morris was unpressed in notching up an Under 13 sprint double. On Saturday he beat the club record & championship best in both heat & final to clock 7.90s, three tenths inside the old club mark to rank second in the UK.  He returned the next day to set a championship best in his heat with 27.17s and was just two-hundredths slower in winning gold by a street – his time is the third fastest by an u13 nationally.  Jairzinho also added long jump silver.

The second club record came from pole vaulter Mercy Gutteridge who stepped to the Under 20 ranks in style by clearing the three metre barrier for the first time for a club U20 best.  Her speed on the runway was confirmed when she later set a respectable 60m sprint PB of 8.30s.

Michelle Hughes’ impressive indoor form continued when she won two Essex golds and a silver.  She twice set PBs at 60m breaking 8 seconds for the first time with her semi-final 7.89s PB, before leading the final for 50m before team mate Modupe Shokunbi overhauled her for gold. Modupe improved her PBs in heat, semi-final and final clocking 7.80s.  Michelle improved her indoor 200m best to 25.64s and was close to her outdoor best in winning Essex gold (& Eastern silver) and also easily took gold in her specialty the 60m hurdles.

Vicky Smith wisely opted for the dry indoor conditions at Lee Valley rather than the mudbath at nearby Epping Forest and won the senior 1500m on Saturday and doubled up with the county 800m title on Sunday. More senior golds went to Bethan Siddons who defended her high jump title with 1.65m and shot putter Emmanuel Quarshie who took men’s county gold with 13.67m.

Discus specialists Georgie Taylor & Rachel Forder won gold & silver in the U20 shot and in the U20 men’s vault Ed Thompson broke the 4m barrier for the first time to win gold with 4.10m closing in on the club record of 4.20m.

One-lap hurdlers George Hadler & Tom Pitkin both won gold in the 400m flat. Hadler front ran to U20 gold setting a new PB of 51.30s while Pitkin improved his best in his heat and the final for Essex U17 gold & Eastern silver clocking 51.48s – fifth fastest indoors by an U17 Man this winter.

Mayi Hughes had a busy weekend and came home with three medals and four PBs in the U15 age group.  Her high jump PB of 1.45m won county silver, and PBs in hurdles (9.77s) & long jump (4.58m) won bronze while her fourth PB came in the 200m.

More medals came from Alex Law with silver in the U20 long jump while his younger sibling Max won a hat trick of U13 gongs in the hurdles, shot and long jump.  Lewis Bailey smashed his personal best for 60m & 200m on the way to a pair of bronze medals in the U17 age group and Bella Woods won U20 1500m silver.

There was a trio of county hurdles bronze medals for Lucy Bailey (U17W), Karl Tucker (U20M) & Jeremy Watson (seniors) and the medal roll was completed by bronze medals for Karrie Mitchell (U15 800m – PB) & Aaron Freshwater (U13B high jump equal B) to round off a promising couple of days.Pride of place
