Essex & Eastern Indoor Championships, Lee Valley, 3rd & 4th February 2018
Club athletes came in from the cold to rack up a
20 medal haul at a very successful weekend at the Essex and Eastern Indoor
Championships at Lee Valley.
The gold rush started on Saturday when club athletes won three hurdles titles and a silver. Toby Bishop returned to the club in stunning fashion. The son of club all-time great Mark Bishop was a member briefly a few years ago but has rejoined after showing good form in school and open competitions and his 8.68s clocking in the Under 15 boys' 60m hurdles for Essex gold and Eastern silver set a new club best. Lucy Bailey improved her week-old PB to take Essex & Eastern gold in the senior hurdles and the St Mary's student hopes to improve further in the British Universities Championships. Dominic Alexandru improved his best to add a third hurdles gold in the youngest Under 13 age group, and he came back on Sunday to add high jump gold & 200m silver. Paige Robinson added a fourth hurdles medal with silver in the Under 15 girls event, setting a new PB, and on a busy weekend added another silver & PB in the high jump on Sunday.
The jumps proved successful for club athletes. Shandell Taylor showed good form in winning the Essex and Eastern Under 20 long jump, while Freya Higginbottom (Under 15 silver) and Ashton Thatcher-Gray (under 15 bronze) also leapt onto the long jump podium in their age groups. Uche Okpaluako won county Under 15 high jump gold and Peter Brinton-Quinn took the Essex Under 17 pole vault title.
There was a glut of medals in the middle distance events. Alex Friend won Essex gold and Eastern silver in the Under 17 Men's 1500m, and there were silver medals for Matthew Blacklock, who set new career marks in winning Under 15 800m silver, and Tilly Canty who added an 800m silver in the Under 13 girls 800m. Reece Harriott's PB earned him bronze in the Under 17 men's 800m and Paul Berrett added to his collection with bronze in the Masters 1500m. Karl Tucker's bronze medal in the senior 200m completed the track medal taly.
The medal roll was completed in the throws as Laurence Goodacre won bronze in a good quality senior men's shot competition, and Philippa Gill stepped up into the Under 20 age group to win shot silver with a new indoor best.
With many other personal best and good performances it added up to a fine weekend on the boards for club athletes.
