Essex & Eastern Indoor Championships, Lee Valley, 2nd & 3rd February 2019
Jacob Blanc’s double gold headlined an excellent weekend for club athletes at the Essex & Eastern Indoor Championships at Lee Valley.
The South of England Champion was a comfortable winner of the Under 15 60m hurdles title on Saturday with a UK leading 8.64s and he doubled his medal tally with gold in the 300m on Sunday with a new career best of 39.04s, second fastest indoors nationally in the age group this year and fourth on the club all-time lists.
Jessie Collier stepped up to the Under 17 age group with victory in the pole vault with her 2.60m clearance and Alice Brown celebrated her first race in the same age group with 1500m victory in 4m 57.04s. More Essex gold medals were won by Toby Bishop who trimmed his Under 17 60m hurdles best to 8.57s in his heat and was a hundredth slower in the final, and Tayllah Barton-Conde whose 200m PB of 26.11s won Essex gold and Eastern silver, beaten in a photo finish in her debut as an Under 17. Cynthia Asiegbu showed promise in her first event in club colours with Essex gold and Eastern bronze in the Under 15 high jump with her 1.55m clearance.
Karl Tucker (senior) and Paige Robinson (Under 15 girls) added to the hurdles medal tally with silvers, and James With added U17 hurdles bronze on his debut. Vaulters Peter Brinton-Queen and Reece Debenham earned Eastern and Essex silvers in the Under 17 pole vault, as did Freya Higginbottom in the Under 15 long jump, and Mali Grant who returned from a long injury lay off with a huge PB in the Under 17 300m.
More silver service on the track came from 400m runners Reece Harriott (Under 20 Men), Somto Okpalauko (Under 17 Men) and Under 20 woman Jade Kavanagh while Alice Atkins took silver in the Under 17 800m, and Uche Okpalauko and Olivia Boachie won silver and bronze in the Under 15 300m. Bronze medals for Philippa Gill (under 20 shot PB) and James Radden (Under 13boys high jump) completed the medal haul.
