Essex Indoor Championships, Chelmsford, 21/22 February 2004

Six golds and a clutch of other medals were the reward for club athletes competing last weekend at Chelmsford in the Essex Indoor Championships.

There were three golds on Day one on Saturday, when the field events were contested. Mel Harrison won shot gold, winning the senior title and setting a new club u20 record of 11.21m in the process beating Claudia Barnard's 24 year old mark; Mel also won u20 silver with 10.88m.  Also on Saturday Lucy Sargent leapt to u17 long jump gold with 5.29m and Kirsty Smith triple jumped 10.78m to clinch the u20 crown.

Other field medals went to Hannah Gamester who won two silvers with a long jump of 4.92m and pole vault of 2.30m, while Nathaniel Senior’s PB of 5.05m long jump effort also won u15 boys’ silver.

On Sunday there were five hurdles medals, two of them gold and another gold success in the 60m sprint.

Chloe Van Wulven ran 8.89secs to take gold in the u17 hurdles event, while Claire Brennan clocked 9.53s on her way to senior gold and later sprinted to fourth in the flat equivalent in a PB of 8.53s.

Bronze medals were earned by Elizabeth James (10.53s final after a 10.4s heat) in the u15 girls, Uzoma Nnajuiba (PB - 9.96s) in the boys' equivalent, in which Michael Bland was 4th in 10.35s, and Nicola Schofield, also 10.35s for third in the u20 ladies (with Nina Brennan 4th in 11.01s). Anthony Williams ran another PB of 10.1 – a three-tenths improvement - also placing 4th in the u17 boys' event. Nicola Hill (10.7) and Catrina McAuliffe (10.9) went out in the u15 hurdles heats

Matt Russell completed the gold medal haul winning the senior men's 60m with another sub-7 secs clocking, finishing in 6.95s – one hundredth outside his recent club record – after clocking 7.00s in his heat and 6.99s in his semi; Scott Spencer went out at the semi final stage.

Jon Buckler and Simon Parker notched PBs in the u20 sprint final, clocking 7.45 and 7.48 respectively for fifth and sixth, while Lilla Jacks finished fourth in the u13 girls’ event.
