ESSEX GOLD FOR LOCAL ATHLETES

Havering Mayesbrook AC's young middle distance stars, Faye Fullerton and Megan Foley struck gold on Day One of the Essex County Championships at Chelmsford on Monday (1 May).

Fullerton destroyed the opposition in the final of the U-17 Girls' 1500m with a record breaking performance in a splendid new personal best time. Foley (pictured left), whose mother Lesley (nee Kiernan) competed with distinction for Great Britain in the 1970s, was equally impressive in winning the under-13 Girls' 1200m title in a Grade 1 time.

Fresh from his impressive debut for the under-17 boys the day before, newcomer Andy Green took the silver medal in the 200m with another fine display of sprinting with Adrian Lunan taking the bronze medal in this event for the second year running. Another silver medal went to Melanie Harrison in the u-15 Girls' Javelin. Harrison was unlucky to be denied the gold with the final throw of the event. The Club's only bronze medal of the day went to Lucy Sargent in the u-13 Girls' Long Jump. Sargent's mother Ann (nee Wilson) is also an ex-GB athlete.

Although out of the medals, three of the Club's u-15 girls performed with credit all day in the Pentathlon. Caroline Smith (see picture right) with two new personal best performances finished 4th, Lynsey Clark (three pbs) was 8th and Katie O'Sullivan (three pbs) was 9th. All three girls are in the first year of the age group and will be back next year challenging for medals. In the u-15 boys' Pentathlon, Terry O'Leary also performed well in his first attempt at the event, finishing in the top ten.
