Essex Cross Country Championships, Colchester, 4 January 2014

Club athletes returned from the Essex County Cross Country Championships at Colchester with one gold, three silver and a bronze medal.

As anticipated the Under 13 Girls continued their mastery of the county scene by adding a full set of medals - team gold and individual silver and bronze. Kate O'Neill led the team home for individual silver clocking 13:43, with Katie Mitchell taking bronze in 13:56 to earn automatic selection for the Essex team in the Inter Counties Championships. The improving Sophie Rand was a fine eighth and Molly Bath's 15th spot ensured team gold.  The strength in this age group was measured by the fact that the club finished two other full teams of four and three others, 15 in all. The B team of Catherine Barker (17th), Jessica Mitchell (20th), Molly Sweetman (31st) & Kate Walker (33rd) were fourth, the C team of Jessica James (35th), Ella King (37th) Hannah Paton (44th) & 45th placed Millie Lewis were eighth with Chloe Morter, Amelia Day & Rebecca Stanley in reserve for 15 finishers.

The Under 17 Girls claimed team silver  as Lydia Hallam (4th), Sarah Wilson (5th) and Heidi Surman-Wells (8th) all made the top 10 and  Zoe Rudgley's vital 23rd place finish ensured team silver with Abbie O'Neil in 28th. Lydia & Sarah won automatic Inter Counties selection.

Any hopes of the already depleted Senior Women defending their title or even making the podium disappeared with an injury and fall early on. Faye Fullerton won an excellent silver behind her training partner & Basildon International Gemma Kersey and Debbie Appleton was given eighth although observers felt she finished higher in a blanket finish for 6th, 7th and 8th places. Jo Sullivan pulled a hamstring soon after the start and had to pull out and Vicky Smith slipped over at a bend early on and gamely carried on to finish a creditable 19th and it was left to  Clare Rudgley in 107th to at least ensure the club had a scoring quartet in eighth place.

That at least was better than the Senior Men managed. Although their Essex league average turn-out this winter has been fifteen athletes, only five hardy souls lined up for the longer 7.5 mile County Championship course. Rob Warner's great season continued with another powerful run to take 5th place with Ian Anthony next home in a very good 27th (after warming up with another Southend Parkrun victory that morning!). Matt Bland turned in another solid performance in 43rd, Barry Ward was next home in 126th and Tony Collins completed the roster in 162nd.but they were one short of a scoring six.

Other young athletes teams finished fourth or fifth. The Under 15 Girls were fourth thanks to Gemma Archer-Hayley (13th), 16th placed Lois Wyatt and 18th for Emily Marshall 21:06 with Holly Hyde in 27th completing the scoring and 31st placed Emily James also competing. Another fourth was recorded by the Under 17 Men with 9th placed Abdul Mohamed leading home the squad of Matthew Braybrook (14th), - Bradley West (23rd) and 25th for Euan Harlow completing the scoring quartet with Robert Woodgate 26th.

There was an excellent turn put of nine athletes for the Under 13 Boys . First home was John Fennessey in 16th with Sam Atkins (27th), - Ben Lammin (30th) and 31st placed Kieran Davies making up the A team in fifth with the B team of Oliver Woods (32nd), Jay Vassallo (37th), Sam Shrimpton (40th) & 44th placed Joseph Hogan-O'Neill taking team seventh with Matthew Bright also finishing.

Also fifth were the Under 15 boys quartet of Oliver Morter (23rd), Lewis Debenham & Tom Sheldrick in 25th & 26th with Oliver Bath 41st. Two Under 20 Women were in action with Isabella Woods in 10th and Heather Wilson one place behind..

The squads are in action again next Saturday (11th) as round 4 of the Essex League takes place at Hockley.;
