Essex Cross Country Championships, Claybury, 3 January 2015

Club athletes battled against difficult cold and wet weather on a muddy & hilly course at Claybury on Saturdayto register some fine results in the Essex Cross Country Championships

The Senior Women added to their fine record in these championships by once again lifting the county title. Faye Fullerton was just outside the medals in fourth and Debbie Appleton was an excellent seventh place to set up the team challenge. Vicky Smith was a fine 12th and Robyn Matson's 19th place ensured victory for the Havering ladies by a 16 point margin over Colchester, with 83rd place Jane Hallam in reserve.

Both Under 15 squads won team silver.

The Under 15 Girls had been unbeaten in the Essex League but on the day had to concede gold to a strong Chelmsford quartet. Kate O'Neill led the team home in sixth and the improving Sophie Rand earned a top 10 finish in eighth. Becca Brown showed a return to her previous form in 11th and Jessica Mitchell 17th place saw off Woodford's challenge. 20:10. Emily James (29th), Amba Coombe (30th) and  Grace McLeod (33rd) also braved the challenging conditions.

The Under 15 Boys have been in good form this winter and the squad earned a well-deserved county silver. Jack Rice recorded another good performance in sixth as did 10th placed Lewis Debenham. John Fennessey (24th) & Sam Atkins (25th) comfortably made sure of a podium place for the quartet.

The Under 13 Girls placed fifth with Molly Sweetman finishing a good eighth, Sydney Foley was 25th in her first scoring race after her 11th birthday, while Jessica James (32nd) & Kate Walker (35th) completed the quartet with 38th placed Ella King in reserve.

Rob Warner led the depleted Senior Men's team home in 12th after falling heavily whilst in fourth place. Next home was Paul Grange who had a great run to take 29th and he was closely followed by Matt Bland who had another good run in 38th. The squad was completed by Jason Crispin in 79th who had completed a Parkrun earlier that day.

The Under 13 Boys finished four points shy of a team medal, and had to settle for fourth. Oliver Woods had another good run in seventh, with Alex Ford 20th in his first county race and Ellis Osborne in 26th & Dominic Jarvis 30th making up the scorers. Henry Lay (35th), 36th - Ben Naish (36th) & Ben Lammin (45th) completed a good turn out.

Heidi Surman-Wells (7th), Lois Wyatt (15th) & Ella Jolly (18th) needed one more for a scoring quartet in the Under 17 Women's event and Isabella Woods in seventh was the only club competitor in the Under 20 Women's race as  an under-the-weather Lydia Hallam had to pull out.

Also short-handed were the Under 17 men's squad with just Janes Stewart (33rd) & Euan Harlow (35th) in action and a fast finishing Abdul Mohamed flew the flag in the Under 20 Men's race in 12th.

With the top five gaining automatic Essex selection for the Inter Counties Championships several of the best-placed club athletes will have to rely on gaining one of the other three discretionary places in the eight-strong teams in each age group.

The cross country squads are in action again next Saturday (10th) as round 4 of the Essex League takes place at Epping, hosted by Orion Harriers.
