Essex Cross Country Championships, Day 1, Abbey Fields, Colchester, 28 November 2015

An individual gold for Kate O'Neill and a full set of team medals were the reward for a good day for club athletes as the first day of the Essex Cross Country Championships were held at Colchester's Abbey Fields on Saturday.

Kate O'Neill's excellent season continued when she added the Under 15 Girls' County title to the Eastern Counties gold that she won seven days earlier, coming home with a 10 second margin over Thurrock's Amber Pullinger. Jess Mitchell once again finished one place outside the medals and Molly Sweetman's eight place and Grace Dukelow's 15th gave the scoring squad a comfortable team gold with  Sophie Rand (18th), Catherine Barker (30th) & Chloe Morter (37th) showing the club's strength in depth.

The Under 13 Boys came good when it mattered with a brilliant team silver. With another year in the age group Alex Ford gave notice of future potential as he finished fourth and Henry Lay's improved to make the top 10. Ben Naish (14th) & Edoardo Sonzogni (18th) brought the squad within six points of winners Harlow to claim a well-deserved silver. The B team of Dominic Jarvis, Jordan Ryan,Timi McDaniel & Jake Long all placed between 32nd & 42nd to place eighth in the team stakes.

Team Bronze for the Under 13 Girls completed the full set of medals and as three of the scoring four have another year in the age group the future looks bright. Sydney Foley's sixth place led the way with Alice Brown close behind in eighth, as Poppy Ellis (20th) & Annie Grannell (27th) ensured bronze. Alice Atkins (31t), Rebecca O'Rourke (36th) & Morgan Romain (42nd) all got their first taste of county action.

With two recent recruits in the squad fifth place was a good result for the Under 15 boys. John Fennessey (12th) & Sam Atkins (16th) did well to make the top 20 and Alex Friend (31st) and Billy Fox (46th) completed the scoring.

The Veteran Men were also fifth, with Steve Rand also leading the team home in fifth. Matt Bland (11th), Martin Chester (26th) and Paul Berrett (39th) were the scoring four with Paul Wyatt 47th & Steve Walker 56th.

Jo Sullivan's first run of the season in club colours flew the flag for the  Veteran Women in 24th place.
