Essex Cross Country Championships, Day 1, Writtle College, 26 November 2016

Two golds and four silvers was the impressive medal haul from the first day of the Essex Cross Country Championships held at Writtle College on Saturday. But an administrative mess up meant that the victorious Under 15s girls will have to wait to receive their trophy and team gold medals as they were wrongly recorded as placing third and went away with bronze medals on the day before the error was spotted.

Molly Sweetman retained her unbeaten record in county competitions this winter to take the Under 15 Girls' gold medal and earn Inter Counties selection. Fine performances from her teammates Lily Bath (9th), Grace Dukelow (15th) & Poppy Ellis (18th) gave the team a three point cushion over Basildon with Chelmsford, who had incorrectly been presented with the gold medals, in third. Molly Bath (26th), Katie Rafferty (34th) & Charlotte Wright (39th) also competed for Havering.

Both Under 13 squads came home with individual and team silver medals.

The Under 13 Girls were led home by Sydney Foley whose individual silver earned her selection for the Essex Inter Counties team. Chloe Rand, who has another year in the age group, was a fine ninth, with Alice Brown (17th) & Hannah Yexley (22nd) completing the scoring quartet who took silver, as Basildon claimed gold.  Havering also fielded two other full teams with a sixth placing for the B team (24th - Alice Atkins, 28th - Rebecca O'Rourke, 30th - Maddie Barker & 31st - Freya Higginbottom) and eighth for the C team of Isobelle O'Connor (32nd), Holly Bradley (33rd), Ava Poulson (35th) and Jess Collier (37th) with Mary Lammas also competing (39th).

Alex Ford won silver for the Under 13 Boys and had looked like winning gold until he was edged out in the finishing straight by Southend's Kristians Kalmanis. Matthew Blacklock placed fifth on his Essex Championships' debut to win an inter counties place and will be challenging for a podium place in this age group next year. Sam Bradley (17th) & Lenny Houston (19th) completed the silver medal winning foursome and Oliver Yexley (21st) & Timi McDaniel (35th) also took part.

The Under 15 Boys finished outside the medals but competed well. Alex Friend in ninth was first home with Ben Naish (32nd), Dominic Jarvis (34th) and Louis Berrett (44th) the scoring four and Edoardo Sonzogni (46th),Jake Long (48th) & Henry Lay (50th) in reserve.

For the Veteran Men Steve Rand went one place better than last year in a fine fourth but they were one short of a full team as Gary Atkins (39th) and Steve Walker (52nd) were the other runners.
