Essex Cross Country Championships, Day 1, Writtle College, 2 December 2017

Club athletes bagged an impressive eight medal haul at the first day of the Essex Cross Country Championships, for Under 13, Under 15s and Veterans, held at Writtle College on Saturday.

Matthew Blacklock started the medals rolling in the first race when he stepped up from fifth place last year to win Under 13 Boys gold and maintain his unbeaten sequence this winter. Callum Basinger (13th), Owen Fisher (20th)  and Joseph Baxter (27th) had memorable county debuts when they completed the quartet to earn team  bronze. The B team of Ryan McCarthy (37th), Joshua Lee-Prime (38th), Archie Winney (41st) & 47th placed Sam Wilkins were eighth.

Natalie Sewell added a second club gold when she was victorious in the Under 13 Girls' event and Tilly Canty (7th), Chloe Rand (8th) and Maddie Barker (15th) ensured team silver. Hannah Yexley, Isobelle O'Connor, Holly Bradley and Heidi Aylen all finished between 19th and 25th to form the sixth placed B team, while Ava Haythorn, Hollie Freeman and Ruby Lendon also tasted county action.

Sydney Foley finished one place outside the medals in the Under 15 Girls' championships but earned automatic Essex selection for the Inter Counties in the New Year. Alice Brown & Lily Bath finished together in 13th & 14th and Alice Atkins' 22nd place completed the bronze medal winning foursome. Annie Grannell (25th), Rebecca O'Rourke (26th) & Ava Poulson (32nd) provided support.

Debbie Appleton 11th place finish in the Veteran Women's  championship saw her cross the line as the second placed W45 athlete to add another silver. Sibling  Jo Sullivan (33rd), Angie Thompson (36th) and Juliet Ward (73rd) made up the ninth placed scoring quartet while Tracy O'Neill finished 96th.

Matt Bland was a fine runner up to claim silver in the Veteran Men's M50 age group and Simon Hart (50th), Paul Berrett (56th) and Darren Priestley (72nd) ensured a scoring team who placed ninth. Steve Rand finished just outside a podium place in fourth in the M40 age group but came away with a medal as Jason Lendon (13th), Steven Dukelow (22nd) and Martin Chester (31st) edged out hosts Springfield by a single point to claim team bronze. Gary Atkins (35th), Graham Hogan (38th) and Steve Walker (43rd) also competed.

Alex Ford was a respectable eighth in the Under 15 Boys race and will hope to challenge for podium places next year. Luke Chester (21st), Lenny Houston (30th) and Henry Lay (34th) completed the scoring four who finished sixth.
