Essex County Cross Country Relay Championships,

There were two medal-winning performances from club teams at the Essex Cross Country Relays at Hadleigh on Saturday.
The Under 13 girls struck silver. Emily Marshall ran 12:39 on the opening leg to come home fourth and Rebecca Brown’s second leg of12:50 maintained the pressure before Katie Mitchell’s fastest leg of 12:24 bagged silver. The B team of Sophie Rand’s (13:26), Jessica Mitchell (13:22) & Kate O-Neill (13:29) finished seventh.
There was bronze for the Under 15 girls trio. Jess Ward led off with a 12:16 clocking before Gemma Archer-Haley’s swift second leg of 11:48 put them in medal contention and Amy Baggs’ anchor of 12:27 sealed third place & the bronze medal. Louise Lear (14:12), The B trio of Louise Lear (14:12), Abbie O’Neill (16:55) and Zoe Rudgley (13:57) were 11th.
The Under 17 women came home fourth thanks to Becky Ward (12:54), Lindsey Wiggins (16:55) and Zoe Mabo (16:24). The Under 13 boys fielded three teams and the A Threesome of George Hart (12:07), Bailey Hearne (11:47) and Oliver Morter (12:06) were just outside the medals in fourth. The B & C trios were eighth & ninth thanks to Kieron Davies (12:39), Ben Walledge (12:48) and Freddie Bushell (13:33), and Arron Westwood (12:37), Harvey Joliffe (13:42) and Michael Vanderhook (14:11).
Despite injuries and withdrawals the senior men’s team achieved a creditable 5th place. Steve Rand (18.06) completed the first leg in 5th place and Rob Warner (17.14) took up the challenge, bringing the team up to third. Jamie Buckley-Stanton (18.31) ran well coming home in 4th place. He handed over to Simon Hart (19.40) who was overtaken in the last hundred metres and brought the team home in 5th place. Matt Bland (19.27) returned to race action after a long injury lay off coming home 10th on the first leg.
Debbie Appleton got the Senior women off to a flying start when she led home the 25 first leg runners in 20:45) and Angie Thompson (23:51) and Jo Sullivan (24:24) did well to finish in a fine fifth position.
The Under 17 Men finished fifth with legs from Andrew Holland (10:51) and Nick Shade (10:21) and Ed Thompson (10:53). Sam Dell (13:05), Eddie Rudgley (14:58) and Bradley West (15:03) made up the 8th placed Under 15 boys team.
It was good experience for many of the younger runners, in their first outings in club colours giving them a taste of what to expect when the league season gets under way on 13th October.
