Essex County Cross Country Relay Championships,

Hockley Sat 28th September 2013

There were three medal-winning performances from club teams at the Essex Cross Country Relays at Hadleigh on Saturday.

The Under 13 girls struck gold & bronze. Rebecca Brown’s opening leg of 11:49 set the scene as she came home in front and Kate O'Neill's 11:46 stage extended the lead before Katie Mitchell’s fastest leg of 11:43 brought the trio home almost two minutes in front as the trio posted the three fastest times. The B team of Sophie Rand’s (12:01), Chloe Morter (14:17) and fourth fastest overall Molly Bath (11:52) anchored the team to bronze.

The Under 17 women also claimed gold. Heidi Surman-Wells opened up with a 11:54 stage in second before Sarah Wilson's 11:22 leg (& second fastest U17) took the lead and Lydia Hallam's fastest leg of 10:54 anchored the team to gold.

The other young athletes teams had good turn outs and recorded top 10 placings. The Under 13 boys came home seventh thanks to legs from Kieran Davies (12:04), and newcomers John Fennessey (11:29) and Sam Atkins (11:58) with the B team of Ben Lammin (12:14), Toby Marshall (15:17) & Sam Shrimpton (14:16) in 13th.

The Under 17 Men were also seventh after legs by Matt Braybrook (10:23), Brad West (11:27) and Abdul Mohamed (10:38) while the B trio of Robert Woodgate (11:42), Euan Harlow (12:02) and U13 Joseph Hogan-O'Neill (12:59) also competed.

Both Under 15 squads placed ninth - the girls team being Emily Marshall (12:34), Holly Hyde (14:41) and Gemma Archer-Hayley (12:06) and the boys Oliver Morter (11:11), Zak Killoran (10:41) & Tom Sheldrick (10:53). The B team of Oliver Bath (11:42), Aaron Westwood (12:03) and Lewis Debenham (11:22) combined for 12th.

The Senior Men were hit by injuries & late withdrawals but still finished a creditable sixth. Steve Rand's 16:34 opening leg placed fifth and Rob Warner's fast split of 15:25 put the quartet in bronze medal position but Matt Bland (17:27), returning from injury, and late replacement Sam Jackson (18:55) although unable to hold off the opposition brought the team home sixth. Luke Jackson (23:20) and Tony Collins (21:30) made up the incomplete B team.

The Senior Ladies flew the flag in 23rd thanks to efforts from Tracey O'Neill (24:36), Bobbie Westwood (26:02) and Juliet Ward (24:18) .

It was good experience for many of the younger runners, several of them in their first outings in club colours giving them a taste of what to expect when the Essex Cross Country League action gets under way on 19th October.
