There were two golds, three silver and three bronze medals at Saturday's Essex Cross Country Champs for Seniors, U13s and U15s at the demanding and undulating Claybury course. |

Trevor Keys continued his great Essex League form to take the bronze medal in the senior men’s county championships. He led home a Havering team diminished by injuries but filled with determined athletes who posted an excellent display to take the team bronze over the 12km course. The strong running Rob Warner was the second team member home in 25th with Peter Coates running well in 33rd. They were followed in close order by Rob Dickenson and Martin Chester both battling hard to take 36th and 40th respectively. Neill Collins having his best run of the season in 49th completed the scoring sextet and his brother Tony completed the competing squad in 58th Although only a small squad, Trevor Keys' third place and some impressive middle order runs help gain the team the bronze medal as the team tallied 186 points to finish well clear of fourth placed Orion, as Woodford Green took gold, with Chelmsford runners-up. |

The U13 Boys were led by superb performances by Michael Jones and Jamie Buckley-Stanton who won individual silver and bronze medals to claim the County Team Title.
Taylor of Thurrock dominated the age group, as he has all season, but he was pushed hard by a strong run by Michael in the silver medal position with Jamie finishing fast to hold onto the bronze medal position. Tremendous support was given by Jack Waldron and Liam Bush having their best races of the winter in 12th and 14th respectively. The Team won with 31 pts, seven points clear of runners up Thurrock on 38 pts. The B team with Mitch English 17th, Chris Sullivan 18th, Jonathon Seekings 29th and Luke Overton 41st finished a creditable 6th place with 105 points. Robert Lofthouse provided valuable support in 42nd.

The U15 Boys set off determined to defend the Title won convincingly last year with 4 Havering runners in the top ten from the beginning. Matt Bloy led the field on the first lap but was unable to hold off the strong second lap of Ronnie Sparke of Woodford Green. Matt held on to finish an excellent second while Daniel Winters continued to impress year with another excellent performance in fifth place in the strong field. Steve MacLachlan had a good run in 10th place, and the team was closed by Grant Twist running much better than last week to close behind in 12th place. The Team won with 29pts to Southend's 38pts.. The B team also finished 6th place with 104pts, with Simon Brown 21st, Daniel Shanney 23rd, Thomas Shanney 27th and Robbie Kidd 33rd. Valuable support was from Lenny Swain in 36th, John Whitehead 40th and Jamie Harrington 41st. The U13 Girls also repeated their Essex League form to claim team silver. Sidnie Sales repeated her good form to place fourth, three seconds off a medal, and strong runs from Emma McAuliffe (7th), Rebecca O'Neill (14th) and Alex Edwards (23rd) ensured a podium place. Good support was provided by the B team of Nicola Peachey (25th), Deborah Knight (29th), Michelle Lovell (30th) and Jessica Seekings (54th) placing eighth. It was extremely pleasing for the senior women to be able to field a full team at last, even if it was still below strength due to injuries and illness. Harriet Scott, running her first race as a senior over the cross country, produced a fine performance coming home as Havering Mayesbrook’s first athlete in seventh place. Lauren Deadman was placed 9th a short distance behind and can be well pleased with this performance as this was her first race of the season following a prolonged injury that has blighted her promising career. Nikkii Barnett was looking stronger after her Essex League race last week and showed a welcome return to good health to finish 28th. She was chased home all the way by club team mate Jo Sullivan, who completed the scoring in the very good 29th place. The team position overall was fourth, the best this winter and an incredible result following the difficulties of getting everyone fit, healthy and available at the same time. The squad was completed with Lesley Felton in 45th place and Kym Sewell in 50th place, both very good performances over the difficult Claybury course. There was disappointment for the U15 Girls who failed to field a team of four. Ingrid Deane (8th) and Emma Fix (9th) both achieved top ten finishes and Jennifer Holland was not too far back in 14th but without a fourth runner any medal hopes vanished. |
