Essex
Championships
Day
One – Colchester 7th May 2001
Havering Mayesbrook AC’s young athletes came away with the usual clutch of medals from Day 1 of the Essex County Championships at Colchester on Bank Holiday Monday. The final tally included four golds, three silvers and seven bronze.
In the youngest age group, Helen McDonnell took the honours with some excellent sprinting to take the under-13 girls’ 150m in 20.5 sec (just one tenth of a second outside the Championship record), shattering the existing Club record. The Sacred Heart schoolgirl then followed-up in the Long Jump by winning the silver medal with a leap of 4.36m.
In the under-15 age group, the Club had a one-two in the girls’ 1500m with Sara Luck running away with the title followed by the progressive Charlotte Watkins in second place in her first year in the age group. In the same age group, Lynsey Clark threw a new personal best of 31.35m to win the Discus event. For the boys, Andrew Bartlett (running in his Campion School colours) won the under-15 200m in a stunning 23.6sec (against a Grade 1 time of 24.3sec).
Havering Mayesbrook vests were again to the fore in the under-13 girls’ 1200m with Katie Richardson taking the silver medal and Lauren Clark the bronze. Another bronze in this age group went to Lucy Sargent in the 75m Hurdles.
In the under-13 boys’ category, Matthew Watkins followed sister Charlotte’s example with not one but two splendid bronze medals – proving his stamina in the 1500m and his sprinting ability in the 200m.
In a highly competitive under-15 girls’ 200m event, Nicola Schofield also took bronze as did Melanie Harrison in the under-17 girls’ Javelin. Finally, after a long day’s competition in the under-15 girls’ Pentathlon, Caroline Smith won the bronze medal with 2500pts whilst Katie O’Sullivan was just outside the medals in 5th place. Other athletes reaching finals included Megan Foley, Christine Kalejaiye, Elle Young and Martin Heys.
The Championships continue this weekend with Days 2 and 3 at Southend and Havering Mayesbrook athletes will be looking to add to the medals haul.
